70's Prog album cover in general could be considered art. The stylistic beauty or pure simplicity of many covers has left a considerable mark on both art and music history forever. What do you think personally lies behind the art of the prog cover?

So crazy for you to make this thread. Earlier today I was thinking to myself how beautiful so many covers are and how I used to not be affected by visual arts until I found prog. In most cases for me, the art on the outside needs to be just as good as the music inside.  It amazes me when I see the cover of an album and then listen to the music, and then realize, wow, these two pieces of art were meant for each other.  Ones that amaze me the most at this time are Fragile, The Grand Wazoo, and Red Queen to Gryphon Three.  Great music deserves a great visual.

The notion of concept, shared by the musical group and the artists (in most cases).

Even albums that are not "Concept Albums" could have strong concepts here in there that give the dinamics to the splendous art.

Obvious examples: Aqualung, Selling England by the Pound, any Roger Dean cover...
- From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

At one time, albums had to stand out from one another in a store, so more and more elaborate album covers were created until it became a form of a band's artistic expression and persona.

A ton of expressionism, to say the least! As I've stated in other threads, there's definitely a correlation for me between prog/jazz rock/fusion and surrealism.

I agree with the favorite album covers thread idea.
