A live vid from the Mexican boys - doing their own thang with a homemade string instrument and infinite gusto:

We saw them at our first NEARfest, in 2009, and were immediately won over. I don't know if they are still together, though. We will see the new band of their former member Ramses Luna at ProgDay. |

What?!?!! I had no idea Ramses (love that name) was up to new things.
What is the name of the new group and, perhaps more importantly, do you know what kind of music they're doing? I hope Cabezas de Cera hasn't come to an end though. Man I love those guys.

Ramses actually is in more than one band. His current main gig, Luz de Riada, should have appeared at last year's ProgDay, but there were problems with the visas (unfortunately all too frequent for bands that want to perform in the US), and they had to pull out. This other project is called Pascal Gutman Trio, and here's some info from the ProgDay site: http://progday.net/Bands-PascalGutmanTrio.html

well, Irish...there's a difference! It's hard for me to post about Clannad here because 1) they are not on PA 2) they should be based on a series of albums in the mid 80s - geez any group that became proggy in the 80s should get some credit! So it bothers me when I see some of the bands in prog folk while Clannad sits on the sidelines largely because of their new agey reputation, which was somewhat deserved after they starting emulating Enya (initially they influenced her) 3) they are actually very well known, although I suppose they should be better known in prog circles so here is a favorite, showing their broad influences and here is a more rocking number that has influenced quite a few acts including IONA. Note: on the fadeout I always crank it - why did they fade it out! Edited by kenethlevine - July 24 2015 at 15:06 |

Thanks Raff - you're wonderful! These two names are going on my to-get-list. |

They are in Eclectic, which in my view suits their music. While they often have a folky vibe going on, they also have edgier, almost Avant elements to their sound. Edit: Ninja'd by Ken himself! Anyway, regarding Clannad (which I like quite a bit), I am in agreement with you, Ken. When we saw Iona at NEARfest in 2010, I could not help noticing the similarities between them and Clannad - which other prog sites (such as DPRP) have often covered, new-age or not. I would be in favour of adding them, but then I am not a member of your team. Edited by Raff - July 24 2015 at 15:21 |

Big fan of Cabezas here too...no scratch that I'm huge fan! I have all their albums plus one live album, all are incredible except for Hermanded, their last one which didn't include their wind instrument player, seems like the reason why it wasn't successful. But yeah I'll have to check out Ramses too. |

thanks to Raff and SteveG, I may revisit Clannad in prog folk. I'm not sure they were ever formally proposed, but their influence on prog acts alone should qualify them as prog related, even though I rarely push for such a watered down inclusion
