I remember at one point in the '80s asking a grocery clerk for a free poster of the Genesis boys circa Abacab. I believe the whole thing was being sponsored by Mountain Dew or the like. If my memory is faulty, let me know.

This has been a source of debate elsewhere but around the mid-70s, a Thames ITV drama (UK) featured a character perusing the cover of Leg End by Henry Cow. More recently, amazed to see Robert Fripp on prime time TV greeting his wife (Toyah) from the jungle on I'm a Celebrity! While on the same programme, I was willing Steve Davis (famous UK prog fan) to discuss his love of Magma, RIO etc. with the other celebs but he obviously held back on that one!

I was watching The Simpsons last night, an episode called Viva Ned Flanders, and was excited to find that The Moody Blues were in it! Also, in another called Covercraft, Homer and Bart debate on Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel in Genesis

Today on National Public Radio’s
All Things Considered, there was a feature on New Orleans 10 years after
Hurricane Katrina, and at the end they played a bit of an acoustic guitar
instrumental version of Here Comes the Flood.Anyone know who that might be?

^ listen all the time but I wasn't paying attention-- I notice quite a bit of progressive fusion and electronic on NPR, and some pretty cool stuff. I often feel like checking their site or calling for the artist.

I was somewhat surprised at the prog reference in The Venture Bros.
I'm sure this has been posted approximately a million times before now.
In the episode "past tense" doc venture has the album You by Gong on his wall, in addition to yes and pink floyd posters.
MST3K drops lots of prog references. My personal favorite is in monster a gogo, one of the crew name drops robert fripp when some noodely guitar sound is heard. in pod people, a drum loop is played repeatedly, and tom servo name-checks neil peart.

Yet another "Carry On Wayward Son" reference. This time in a commercial for Miller Lite. (Not really unexpected because this ad's at least a couple months old and get shown about 1000 times a day on every freakin' channel.....)

I’d been meaning to bring up this
one for a long time:
In Kermit Schafer’s bloopers
collection “Bloopers, Bloopers, Bloopers” (Bell Publishing Co., New York, 1984)
the following account of a blooper-that’s-not-actually-a-blooper can be found:
In Webster’s Dictionary the
word “spoonerism” is defined as an unintentional interchange of syllables.A well-known disc jockey was the victim of
this tongue twister: “And now we have a new LP by Caravan—that pleasantly insane
British group.It is entitled ‘Cunning
Stunts.’”
On one hand it was nice to see
even this little bit of promotion for a favorite album that wasn’t terribly
well-known, but still…
Really, Schafer?Did he even bother to check to see if there
actually was a group called Caravan that had an album by that actual
title? And even if he or any of his
staff bothered to do the bare minimum of research, why would he think this was
a spoonerism?Did he honestly believe
the actual title was…

I was watching an episode of MST3K recently, and during one of the skit breaks between the movie, the bots said they wanted to "make a rock opera in the vein of 70's progressive rock bands like Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and maybe even Emerson, Lake, and Palmer!"
They've made many jokes about ELP and Yes before, but I was surprised to hear them mention Gentle Giant.

Not
especially unexpected, given the era it’s set in, but…
On the 4/13 episode of the
ABC series “The Goldbergs”, titled “Rush,” the daughter, Erica, is turned on to
prog-rock, specifically Rush, by a classmate, and is inspired to join a Rush
cover band.

On the last season of “Friends,” the
episode “The One With Ross’s Grant”, Phoebe gives Rachel her black book of all
the guys she’s dated, and a few pages in, Rachel asks: “Isn’t Jethro Tull a
band?”Phoebe smiles coyly and replies, “Oh,
yes, they are.”
