Probably. Some record labels are starting to accept demos again though. :D

With today's home studios they'll no doubt use them for actual releases and thereby maximize their profit potential. (cynical I know)

Are you saying they'd sign the band and use the demos without their permission to bring their contract closer to expiration, or that they'd blatantly use them as releases without signing the band?

You posted "i saw the film yesterday" and then "Age of Ultron was amazing" which should have been the other way around shouldn't it have? Or did you mean "I saw a film yesterday" (non-specific) and then were specifying with "Age of Ultron was amazing"? It doesn't bother me or anything. I'm just curious.

They'd sign the band, but then probably release the demo. I have to believe that in this day and age most "demos" can be as well produced as any major studio. If bands are trying to get contracts (and that's sort of like trying to win the lottery) they more than likely put a great deal of effort into them. It's not like the 60's or 70's when they would record themselves live on cassette and mail it into the labels. Think about it, if they don't get a contract they would probably end up wanting to release the material themselves, why would they make something that they would have to redo again? Best foot forward and all that.

I'm just not sure how that observation is cynical. Tongue

No, I just don't see what you pointed out as anything bad unless done without the band's permission. If the label releases a demo with the band's permission that doesn't need to be rerecorded, why rerecord it? And, of course, labels have to support their bands and themselves so they need the money. If the release isn't good enough, the label won't spend the money on the promotion it takes to release the thing. Anyway, we're not talking huge bureaucratic labels. When I mentioned labels taking demos again, I was talking specifically about Sub Pop and Jagjaguwar, who are indie labels who don't have a history of lawsuits or shady practices, not Cash Money, the exact opposite.
