Looking to start a fight! Let's get to it!
Meshuggah are absolutely awful. All of their songs sound exactly the same. EXACTLY THE SAME. Detuned, dull, droning guitars playing riffs in different time signatures as the drummer, who does the exact same drum beat in every song. And the singer (if ya wanna call him that) shouts the same, incomprehensible dribble over every song, using the exact same vocal melody (if ya wanna call it that) in every friggin' song!
Most of the people I went to uni with absolutely worship Meshuggah, but there's absolutely no musicality in what they do. You can't hum their songs, or barely sing them. Only music students who obsess with being the most intelligent, mathematical musicians obsess over them, as if playing guitar riffs in 7/3 over a 14/9 drum beat makes them superior musicians. It's not cool, it's not funny, and it's not clever.
In simple terms, they're utter sh*te. I'm calling out any Meshuggah fans to defend them and convince me of why they're worth listening to.
Oh, and 'Catch Thirty-Three' is probably the worst album I've ever heard.

Oh and some acts don't rely on melodies or hummable tunes. The focus of the music lies elsewhere - on groove or ambiances or something completely different. Most Krautrock doesn't rely on melodies either yet I'm still an avid fan of the sub.

That´s right David. Groove and ambience are exactly two of Meshuggah´s great assets, not melody or instant catchiness. They are not for everyone either. Personally it took me around 10 years before I understood their music and was able to appreciate it. I fully understand why some people will never be able to listen to their music and enjoy it. They are very much an aquired taste.

I do seem to remember checking them out a few years ago, but I honestly can't recollect whether or not I liked what I heard

Well at least you´re used to repetitive rhythms from your krautrock "obsession", so that part of Meshuggah´s music probably won´t be a problem. I´ve noticed some listeners calling their music monotone and emotionally linear (full on aggression almost all the time), which is something I hear too. It´s not an issue for me though, just another uncompromising feature about their music, which I appreciate.
It's alright - even music that I agree to be "monotonous", like Can fx, I still find it very varied and layered. I guess it just takes a little patience in learning to appreciate what is happening outside of the "beat". I know I felt the same trying to get into both modern electronic and hip hop when I first started out. The monotonous and in your face BEAT was so overpowering that I couldn't hear anything else.
Things have changed though, but it took a little getting used to.
BTW I'm not saying this is for everyone - but perseverance does pay off in some cases.

Don't really get them, they seem to be one of those groups people either love or absolutely detest with very little middle ground.

I'm very much in the middle ground on them. I think there is real merit in their music but I always want them to do something more than what they do... but seriously Destroy Erase Improve is a classic of metal.
I always wanted Meshuggah to maybe have a Cellist, Violinist, and maybe a wind or brass instrumentalist as well as keyboards. Really that would sound nothing like Meshuaggah. I'm just dreaming up another band entirely. What is wrong with me?

I do that as well with bands I'm not entirely convinced by. I then, as you probably know by now, add bassoons.

The Swedes are a wonderful breed. We love them here in Denmark - especially during the warmer months where they can be frequently viewed near beaches and, of course, the small bars of the inner city.
