Topic: No More Post Requirement to Create New Threads Posted: April 06 2015 at 20:42 |
Hello everyone!
The admin team has decided, due to the easy spam management tools in the new forum software, to eliminate the "Forum Newbie (<5 Posts)" user group. This means that all users, no matter how many posts they have, can create new threads in all forums. There seems to be an increase in the number of users who would like to start discussion threads, and we believe that this will be a way to increase discussion and forum participation. The admins will closely monitor whether the amount of spam on the forum increases due to this change, and if a significant amount of spam appears, the user group may be re-instated. Forum newbies still cannot vote in polls until they become Forum groupies, however. Here is the list of the "ladder groups" on the forum.
Points are awarded via this system:
4- and 5-stars are awarded to users selected by the admins for constructive contribution to the site. See here for more on how to be promoted. Feel free to discuss this change and offer any constructive criticism or ideas for how to improve the ladder group system. Edited by Andy Webb - April 06 2015 at 20:46 |

While these threads are pretty annoying, I'd rather have this than a PM or email asking "WHY CAN I NO POST THREAD?!1!??". Those threads usually generate some comical discussion anyway and are usually merged with other threads or locked anyway.

Completely agree - just teasing a bit.
It'll hopefully encourage more (unique) activity here. Great decision you guys.

Excellent news - glad to see better spam-control tools are at your disposal.
Excluding Newbs from voting on polls is I guess still a necessary restriction, which is a bit of a shame given that it was introduced to prevent people creating duplicate accounts to manipulate polls. When the ability to create multiple accounts is curtailed perhaps that too can be lifted.

^I guess I should have said that the new software allows the elimination of a spam user account in two clicks. There is a spam filter that I can apply, but I'd be afraid it would be too aggressive, so I'm happy to stay with manual deletion. But auto deletion tools do exist at our disposal, if needed.

Does this mean we will be able to post multiple times in a short period of time? I've lost some posts to this restriction before, though nothing major. But the March Madness (in December) was the time where that happened quite a bit.
Thanks for the work. |

The flood control is still in place. I think it's pretty conservative last time I checked, with a required 5 seconds between posts or something like that, and I removed the cap on # of posts per minute a while ago too.

Some threads disappear. Just like that, for no reason. I've always thought that the biggest problem on this board are admins.

As far as I am aware the Admins are not in the habit of disappearing threads. They cannot however, cater for numpties who either cannot be arsed to create threads in the proper lounge or even remember where the created the thread in the first place. |

There was a thread called "there's no such thing as..." in general section. It's gone. No freedom of speech on this board.

Are you really upset that thread is gone? There are plenty of other banal threads where one can make trite, oft- time indecipherable statements on subjects that usually have nothing whatsoever to do with prog. In fact, you can make up your own in the "Just for Fun" section where such things belong.

Freedom of speech does not apply to privately-owned entities such as this site. It's like asking somebody to put up with being insulted in their own home. Though I am not American, I seem to know how the First Amendment works better than many born-and-bred US people.
