Somewhat of a Kevin Gilbert special to celebrate the release of the 20th Anniversary edition of 'Thud'; we'll concentrate on 3 alternative versions of our favourite tunes. Criss Cross Records continue to surprise with their roster of jazz artists, this time trumpeter Alex Sipiagin (and David Binney is in the mix too). For the fifth week running, more from Polyethylene Pet's forthcoming retrospective. New prog releases from Van Der Graaf and Neal Morse Band. Heavy chamber rock(??) that will do as a genre from Serbian duo 2Cellos (haver you checked out the full You Tube video of 'Thunderstruck'?) ; the Serbian music also continues with Yagull. Having read an article in Classic Rock magazine re Chicago's Terry Kath with the author referring to 'Chicago 2' several times....just a reminder that Chicago never released an album with that title...

This Thursday's show.

We continue to listen to the outtakes, alternative arrangements and demos that have appeared on the excellent 20th Anniversary 'Thud' by Kevin Gilbert. More new jazz from Criss Cross Records artists, (correction we played: '38-58' last week by Alex Sipiagin, not 'Trio Whale', which gets played this). New bassists albums from Eberhard Weber and Marcus Miller. All too brief tribute to Daevid Allen. More from the Unthanks and VdGG. Anne Briggs is there as a reminder that Jimmy Page didn't compose 'Blackwater Side' as suggest on the first LZ album and alas at least two American guitarists have carried the error across on to their own albums.... A couple newish progressive albums that just about meet my criteria for the genre, i.e. have to show some evolution aka progression. In particular Ut Gret with some nice soften fusion between Henry Cow/Soft Machine and the Nerve Institute.

Hi

I regularly check for responses here and if nothing appears after 30-45 minutes, I just concentrate on messages coming (via my main connection to the world):

No correspondence comes this way  most weeks.
So apologies, but try the email address above when the show is live.

Regards

Hi

Welcome back from....? Thanks for those nice words. Last show before a 4 week Easter break this week, so tune in. Show half collated, so the obvious tributes to Andy Fraser and Daevid Allen. This will be the last show to have a Robert Wyatt feature (or two). Ditto Kevin Gilbert.  At last getting into Steven Wilson's newie - much prefer "Raven" for Adam Holtzman's occasional jazz solos - so a long tune. America does Canterbury in the form of Ut Gret. The obvious from Chicago's second eponymous album (not "Chicago 2" as the ill-researched writer at Classic Rock persistently wrote in a recent article on Terry Kath). Full listing tomorrow... I hope.

Had plenty of time this morning, waiting for something to happen, allowing me to edit last night's ALT2 Show:

Just a reminder this is the last show before our Easter break. Back the last week of April. BTW KIM S. in Seattle spotted that our station had changed its address (didn't tell me), so use:
as one of a couple of ways of listening live on Thursdays from 9pm BST.

Back after the General Election.

Some new some old, hopefully most unfamiliar. The St Germain was mentioned quite a bit in my part of Facebook, said by quite a few as the the easy absorbed end of jazz... did it feature on a Jamie Callum radio show 6 weeks ago? A singular dip (album-wise) into the monster (expensive) Spooky Tooth box set. A band IMHO who could produce some stand out rock tracks amongst some mediocre stuff, on most albums. However, 'Ceremony' was another of those musical shocks (with 'ITCOCK' and the first Renaissance album) that Island Records released over here in 1969, and the original LP release, although an challenge delighted me throughout.  (So one part of me suggests the added tracks on this 2015 issue, affect the concept of this album significantly). New Anekdoten album after over half a decade... it's a grower. Probably because of  the lay off, the band have produced an album superior to the last couple: the guests help too as with the track to be played where Theo Travis is saxophone-sinister. Another album celebrating the 100th anniversary of Billie Holiday's birth from the excellent Cassandra Wilson. This is back to back with another favourite female voice, that of Inga Rumpf,  on a recording of the Frumpy reunion gig. Then a few obscurities: Big Foot ('68 brass rock); Whiskey Howl (Canadian blues band with a reasonable harp player, recorded in the early 70's). And Hayseed Dixie blue grassing The Blue Oyster Cult (or is that blue oystering the Blue Grass Cult?).

A particularly short term, so the radio season left at LCR is equally short too, therefore much to cram in during the next few weeks. And for too many reasons I'm feeling the blues and maybe that is reflected with some of the choices. And I have also decided on Nick Drake as the artist of the term. Huge amount being say about Joey Alexander on the web, so couldn't resist. However, I'm enjoying the album from Adam Rogers & David Binney much more. Moonjune  new release with the duo Xadu.  New releases from Cuneiform from master arranger Michael Gibbs and also UK band Guapo. How do you describe the latter: Krimson influences in math rock; I've enjoyed this more than any Guapo recording since the Five Suns album????? Of course with the recent announcement of BB King's death, his music has to be included. Layla is here and for more just than a whim. Kim Sajn released a 4 CD retrospective Polyethylene PET at the beginning of May so dipping into the band's back catalogue in next few weeks. Other interesting new releases are there too.
