	Faith No More is the most creative group of these, although Voivod are originals as well. SG was a favorite back in the day, and they are better than all other grunge, but they are still grunge.

	Voivod, no question. They've become one of those few music groups that basically are their own genre, and it's telling that 30 years after their debut LP there's still nobody who quite sounds like them even though they're one of the most influential prog metal acts.

	all bands good in their own right, and Soundgarden was doing stuff that Rock bands these days have yet to catch up with, but Voivod has my loyalty, each of their albums is like a chapter in the greater story which is the Voivod, their influence is already legendary and will last through the ages...

	I guess it depends where you come from. I obviously from more of a Metal background, naturally would go with Voivod, Soundgarden no doubt was one of the most "proggy" and 70s influenced of the grunge bands, and of course Faith No More was creating some pretty creative genre hopping sounds during their time, plus Mike Patton and his legion of fanboys yada yada...

	One possible explanation can be found in the fact that I didn't understand Voivod at all myself until I had developed a working knowledge of punk, a lot of weird things about Piggy's guitar playing style made more sense compositionally when I had become familiar with that side of their influences. That might explain why people on a prog rock forum might not take so easily to them, because to some of the older posters here punk is still the great enemy that killed prog rock's golden age and sent it into the underground. (or that's how the narrative goes....) I also get the impression Voivod are much more popular in North America, Canada in particular, than in Europe. 	Interesting point... You're familiar with Die Kreuzen right? the upper midwest Hardcore band turned bizarro... they were often sited as one of Voivod's main influences during the 80s,

	I've heard of them but I'm not familiar with their actual music. It's more Amebix and Killing Joke I had in mind, what with both groups having a similar "dystopian future" aesthetic concept informing their music. I kinda wonder if science-fiction lyrics are more appealing to songwriters coming from a punk background than fantasy/horror stuff, on the account of being at least superficially more "realistic"... 	You definitely might like Die Kreuzen then, they also invoke that sprawling/neuromancer/dystopian vibe, their first self-titled album itself is an impressive heap of wiry Hardcore full bendy riffs, a sputtering rhythm section, etc , but by their 2nd album October File, is where they really start to progress, its a bit of a difficult album to digest at first (the vocals take a bit of getting used to) but you can definitely hear where Voivod got a lot of their riffs, and if you want to dare further check out their 3rd album Century Days, in which they get a little more "song" oriented, but even more experimental

	I do not like anything Soundgarden did after Louder Than Love. Still have that LP somewhere around the house. I picked FNM because they were behind, and I like an underdog. But I hold both Voivod and FNM at about the same level of appreciation. There really is no comparing them for me though. I do, however, appreciate the various lineup changes in FNM more than I have in Voivod. Eric was awful (but I do love Planet Hell), and the stuff when Newsted was in the band always sounds dreary to me. But Target Earth and the new stuff is right back on course for me.
