Really good band...........love all the earlier ones and even the later ones had some great tunes on them.
Shine On Brightly is my favorite.

Love pretty much everything they've done (after from bits of Procol's Ninth and stuff). Shine On Brightly is easily in my top 10 all-time albums, and the debut and Salty Dog both masterpieces. Home and Broken Barricades are quite as good on the whole, but still great to listen to. Grand Hotel is another great album, and Exotic Birds is good. One of my current favourites though is Something Magic - can't believe the low rating it's got. The Long Goodbye is another underrated album (thankfully recognised on PA).
One of my favourite rock bands and always so easy to listen to after some intense King Crimson

I recently acquired Shine On Brightly - it's a fairly respectable effort. 1 or 2 tracks later on side 1 are a little drab, but other than that, a wonderful album.
BTW, does anyone pick that Brooker's voice is very similar to Steve Winwood's ?? Edited by Tom Ozric - March 04 2015 at 03:04 |

I saw Procol Harum live in 1968 and became an instant fan. I bought Shine On Brightly right away and eventually added A Salty Dog, Home and Broken Barricades.
The debut album had been discontinued but I picked up the reissue in 1973. A Whiter Shade Of Pale was possibly the most successful (or close to it) single in the history of rock music. I was pleased when it was included in the recent movie Oblivion.

This is from a recent reissue of a 1972 album by a band called "Sleepy Hollow." The tune, words, arrangement etc may be their own, but you can hear echoes of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in it -- at least I think I can. |

I've always felt they made too much use of orchestras. I realise this is a major part of their attraction to a lot of people but overall I don't think rock is greatly improved by an overload of (particularly) strings. Not saying a smidgeon here and there doesn't work and e.g Randy Newman has used strings to very good effect. I remember seeing a PH concert a few years back that was pretty much the band without orchestra. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Somehow, synthesisers just seem to work in this case, rather than the real thing. All that despite my love of acoustic instruments be they in folk, blues, country or classical.
... and yes the Edmonton Conquistador is pretty amazing whereas the original is not a great recording so yep, every rule needs its exception. ![]() |

I have all the albums of the 70s plus The Well's on Fire. I love in particular their works without the orchestra. Broken Barricades is both prog and hard. An overlooked gem.
the best is Homer... their 'dark' record. |

In full shame I'll admit that I really know nothing of PH, but I was happy to see that Esoteric (a label I love) is doing proper reissues of the first albums, so I'm looking forward to picking some of those up and getting an education!

I'm surprised and pleased to see an appreciation thread on PH, a very underappreciated band, IMHO.
