Why is so hard to find these..

Here in Calgary, it is hard to find any of these: IQ, Pendragon, Pallas, Arena, Glass Hammer. I went to HMV, ABSound, Music World, Best Buy, even second-hand CD-Store like TRAMPS.

Do you guys have similar difficulties to find those CDs in your home town?

The local HMV has a decent selection, even a copy of peppers ghost by arena. But in downtown ottawa there is a little place called record runner, HEAVEN. they have a great porcupine tree selection, among many other prog bands, and the cheapest prices in the city.

actually it reminds me of that stupid saying "It was in the last place we looked"....of course it was....why would you keep searching for it once ya found it?

2. Go check out "Hotwax" (it's in the Kensington area of Cowgary) I scored 6-7 decent Prog CD's there just a few weeks ago (Gabriel, King Crimson, Kansas, Nektar) They have a decent vinyl collection as well downstairs...

3. Next go to "Recordland" in the Inglewood area of town. If you don't already know this place, prepare to be blown away as this is probably the BEST kept secret in Canada. I have visited dozens of second hand record stores across the Great White North. Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, and even that bastion of musical genius known as Montreal has NOTHING on this shop in Calgary.

They have tonnes (and I really mean tonnes) of CDs from floor to ceiling, as well as old 45's, 8-tracks, Boxsets, VHS, DVD's and an absolutely MASSIVE room dedicated solely to old vinyl. All their vinyl is kept in plastic, and is quite cheap. If you're into 'older prog' this is the place to go. I can't guarantee that you'll find IQ, Glass hammer or the like there, but personally I've dropped hundreds of dollars in this wonder of all wonders.

Not only does my wife NO LONGER allow me to go visit "Recordland", she won't even allow me to go to that part of Calgary, lest I be tempted to drop this goldmine a visit.

4. If all else fails, just order your prog through ProgArchives' links to CDuniverse.com or Amazon.com

As a matter of course, the "major" CD stores (in the NYC area and most of the U.S., that would include Tower, Virgin, etc.) do not carry the more "obscure" prog bands.  The closest they come is bands like Flower Kings, Marillion, Spock's Beard, The Church, maybe Porcupine Tree, since those groups (among others) "broke into" the "mainstream" at some point, so they are better known (and promoted...)

When I want CDs from the more obscure prog bands - and IQ, Pendragon, Arena and Glass Hammer are, from the pointm of view of "major" stores, obscure - I either go to Dowtown Music Gallery (in NYC), where they have a pretty good selection of stuff, or can order stuff for me.  Or I contact kalifonia records in Italy, which has one of the most extensive rare and OOP prog catalogues I have found.

I guess I'm sort of lucky. The  Best Buy where I live is filled to the brim with Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, and of all things they even have Ayreon... Unfortunately, I cannot find any IQ or Marillion (Fish Era) ANYWHERE, so I have to order those on the net.

It's not like you're missing out on anything....

Best Buy has IQ last time I checked.

Virgin Megastore has pretty much all of those, except the prices are way jacked up.

 

  I,m from Houston Tx, and i can,t finde anything of prog- Rock music, becouse local shops sell only hip-hop, rap, techno dance and another piles of sh*t. Thay belive only in dollars, not in art. Thay are most primitive and misery motherf**kers. Everybody in this world know we( USA resident) live in jaws of big companys, one non -democracy world. My friends from Europe make copys and send to me.
