Listened to the Portuguese pressing this afternoon. Love side A. Like side B.

I love the album, but like to hear it in this order: short tunes first, epic last. To hear the more pop side first sets the ears up for the epic side. A little aural conditioning if you will. To do otherwise, one is set up for a bit of a disappointment. I still like it, but not as much. Relate this to the other discussion on albums. There is an art to sequencing.

Good point, I don't even think the tracks on side two are in the right order. The last track does not sound like it belongs there; to me.

I believe Ant Phillips makes Rutherfotd's compositions come to life on this one. I enjoyed this LP for a few years, then jettisoned it. When I bought a markdown Acting Very Strange vinyl back in '88, thereabouts, I truly lost faith in Mike's ability in composition and song-writing. I know he has tremendous skills on bass (Get 'em Out By Friday seals the deal) , but this is but a certain period he failed to expand upon........... I guess that the music composed later in his/their career was simplified to their capabilities...........

I have good memories of Smallcreep's Day. I only have it on record and was going to digitize it recently, but seem to have forgotten. I have no good memories of Acting Very Strange. Banks did a similar sort of dud too.

A few fine moments overshadowed by other ones MOR. Wish he'd gone with a stronger singer. Somewhat sugary. A little shy to admit it, but like Acting Very Strange a little more, no matter what insults have targeted his vocals on it. Excellent cover art on 'Day, for what it's worth.

Mike seems to be a personality who can add brilliant parts to a group effort, but doesn't quite cut it alone. But hey, that's most people. Tony takes that concept, and turns it into a summer comedy blockbuster. He's clearly the madman behind Genesis, yet I've never heard one thing on a solo album of his that I need to hear again.

I wouldn't have thought I'd ever read the words "Tony[Banks]" and "summer comedy blockbuster" in the same sentence.

Perhaps you have not heard Banks' "Six Pieces For Orchestra". This is excellent. Along the lines of Mike oldfield's "Music of the Spheres"

That's true, I haven't heard Six or Seven yet. I'm going to get those. I was thinking of his rock music.

The novel by, I believe, Curran, is exceptional. Seek it out by all means.
Imagine Gormenghast - only that this world is immense factory, not castle. And Titus is balding.

Always really wanted to like this album but alas it is underwhelming. He's got a lot of good ideas that just never seem to fully take shape.
