The great majority of people do not listen to prog for varius reasons.

They have never heard of it. Most people rely on the entertainment history for there music. The entertainment industry relies on music for profit  thus most of the music presented by the entertainment industry is designed to be accesable to the great majority for greater profit. The end result is music that is no diffrent from its predesesors becouse their formulas are guaranteed to generate profit.

Progressive music does not follow any formulas so the entertainment industry refuses to capitalize on this music becouse it is to risky therefore the great majority who depend on the this industry (radio, MTV,etc...) do not get exposed.

Most people listen to popular becouse everyone else does. It is natural for people to conform becouse they dont want to be left out, they are afraid to go against the current. Prog is not what is "in" or the latest trend so people tend to dismiss it on that fact alone. Prog is not on the top 50 list and has never won any awards, but that is not the point of prog. Prog is Art, it is made for the sake of art and not entertainment. most people do not understand this concept. To them the best "art" is what sells the most.

Since people have been to a sense conditioned by the entertianment industry to listen to these much easier forms of music, prog music is simply not music in there already closed minds.

Music industry have tasted what is "fast food music." I guess it will always be like this from "now" (I don't know when that happened, but it is recent) on.

This will not change. Corporations get more greedy by day, so who knows what is next? Maybe they will sell remixed "musak" versions of music that has fallen into public domain ("musak" is easy to produce and public domain is free of royalties), just like the way Disney selects public domain work for their movies.

When a person eats hamburgers and drink malt liquer all there lives they will not enjoy steak and champagne. even if offered somthing finer they will always fall back on what they allready know they like. Prog is a Fecund pleasure.

Long long thread and a lot a things said in an angry matter. Fantomas I love your avatar, but sure you are ill tempered. It´s only music man, and everybody has different tastes like in women. I have heard before this kind of conversations but the intelligent music has been: a) Classical, b) jazz or c) Progressive. So I think every kind of music has its fair share of asho... and clever people.
enough said.
Peace to you all.

Currently listening to: Martinu, 2nd Concert for Piano.

In my opinion, a lot of you guys look too much into prog sometimes. It's definitely more sophisticated than other forms of music; but it's just music. You don't have to be intellectual to like it, you just have to be able to sit down and enjoy the music. That's just my opinion.

Oh, and I've also been thinking that if prog was mainstream and on TV, it just wouldn't be as enjoyable would it?

i know this is kind of irrelevent, considering this is a PROG site and that i consider rap to be a joke overall, but you should check out THE STREETS. if you're into "indie" rap, or if you live in England, you probably already know them (him). The guys at Pitchforkmedia.com like to bend over backwards for this guy...

I've heard this group, and I don't dislike it, but I don't like it at the same time. It's just okay, I guess.

I'll tell you why. The masses are asses, that's why. Plain and simple. I ought to get out of this "America".

Prog is too complicated.....people need a fast fix.

The average person just does not have the PATIENCE for our music.

Like the difference between a sitcom and a 3 1/2 hour movie.

Takes longer but the pay off is much huger.

Dear Xhamaski

Interesting thread you have started.Clap When I was at school in mid 70s the guys who liked prog also were the guys who went to Uni ( as were those who liked classical) . One is now a Professor of physics ( He was an ELP fanatic ).I think it would be well correlated with intellect and academic achievement but it is certainly not the only form. I think it is deep and so you have to spend more time to get it. Some only want the shallow experience . In any genre you may find depth  and there may also be shallow prog bands and recordings. So I don't want to sound elitist.

I hope you are not discouraged by the flame wars. These occur in every list with certain individuals who imagine it is a sign of intelligence to find fault rather than promote virtue

Kind regards

Losendos

How wonderful to be so profound

Yes,in some ways it would be better, such as more availibilty.  But if it was mainstream it just would not have the magic it does because little 12 year old girls would go around listening to it just for the "trend" and buy up all the tickets, go to the concerts, and flash signs such as "OmG!!!! RoIne StOLT I wAnT UR BABiES!!!111one."  Then we'd have to see that all over MTV!
