A lot of album buyers in the 60s and 70s knew what they wanted when they went to their local record shop. It was usually the latest LP by a band they were familiar with or had recently seen in concert. Other buyers that were expanding their collections were looking for that unknown band or new band that wasn't being played on the radio. Without the internet to preview albums it was more difficult and you often times took a chance. I would look for a band name or cover art that caught my eye and then flip it over and see if I recognized any of the band members. I would even look at who produced the album to see if they had produced any other bands that I liked. As a last resort I would look at song titles to see if I could get some idea of what type of music was on the album. Sometimes you would get a lemon but other times you would discover a rare gem that you never knew existed. |

I took more chances with used records. I remember clearly when the used shops would pop up, and before that - people would advertise their collections in the newspaper classifieds. My friend and I would routinely drive around on weekends buying from these folk and if they were cheap enough i'd grab anything and everything that looked remotely interesting. And you know - after a while - you really could judge an album by it's cover. I was rarely wrong. still works with CDs today ... (although I occasionally get fooled by these new metal bands that have very atypical covers for the genre these days)

That is what makes vinyl shopping the fun it is.......I am finding that same experience with jazz, sure we all know the sound but the lineups is what is a guessing game. Just because Coltrane or Monk or Mingus is listed does not always mean that familiar sound. And I always look at who produced, mastered the album.......That tends to help me a lot. But heck I like the "nothing ventured nothing gained" attitude with vinyl, especially used.

I took a lot of chances buying imports from a mail order house.
But when you're buying albums, it's all good. It's like playing Russian Roulette with a squirt gun - no harm done.

A couple of pics of one of my fav stores in Tacoma, had a blast yesterday with my wife shopping....
![]() ![]() ![]() This store owner has over 120,000 albums in stock, he has an insane collection of classical albums, one whole wall worth floor to ceiling. In the back room he also displays high end audio gear he sells as a Music Hall dealer, Wharfdale Speakers, Music Hall turntables, Creek amps/preamps, Epos speakers, Project turntables.

Good, considering the volume he has, a lot of stuff is in decent not great condition. He runs avg $7 per LP, he does have a good selection of new stuff also at traditionally $20-$30, just depends. I did soil my trousers when I saw these up close in his audio room. ![]() ![]() |

So this is what I picked up yesterday........All great condition and a couple are new issues. The Can album is brilliant, remastered from original analog tapes, vinyl pressing is amazing. Coltrane Live album is also reissue done with the DMM process and also sounds fantastic, really like that one.
Original 1974 issue on the Gryphon album, true analog sound, clean big beefy and good volume too. The Alice Coltrane, Charlie Parker albums my wife picked out...both look pretty good. It was a good heavy jazz day! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Not bad for a day's work, not bad at all.
What can you tell me about Red Queen? Is it anything like Raindance?

Similar although Raindance has vocals, Red does not....and it has more of that Gryphon medieval, baroque, English folk sounding music.

That's a lot of LP's
![]() ![]() Those Wharfedale seem nice, you reminded me I have some old bookshelf speakers from them that I only tried once but I recall they had a very nice sound, considering their small size. I'll see if I can find them ![]() |

Would this be your favorite configuration, as in floor-standing with multiple woofers? I have been trying to convince myself to get (yet another) pair of Klipsch speakers, something like KF-28, but then again, there is always something better ..
