Xanadu manages to grab me every time; Cygnus, not so much.

To stand within the Pleasure Dome. Decreed by Kubla Khan. To taste anew the fruits of life. The last immortal man.

When he rides, my fears subside. For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night.

I like both, but I guess I'll go with Xanadu this time.

I'll be going for Cygnus X-1. Very complex (especially with the 11/8 bits), atmospheric, spacey and even spooky! I also love the "...APART!" scream at the very end |
That "...APART!" scream makes me wince and was a poor ending for this beloved epic. I try to appreciate everything Geddy does, but, really! I'll go with Xanadu because the whole thing sucks the listener into this pleasure dome in the midst of a frozen region high above. The wind sound effects at the beginning make me imagine a slow descending bird's eye view of snow laden mountain tops viewed through thin wisps of Cirrus clouds. Enchantment ensues. Whatever. |
I feel like that does a good job of representing the terror of someone who is being swallowed by a "mysterious, invisible force"; I doubt that I could keep my throat from getting ruptured at that kind of situation... Whatever though, different strokes for different folks
Also kudos for your description about the wind thing

Xanadu, because I think it is the more cohesive of the two pieces.

But only just and because I prefer the ESL version of Xanadu to the original. |

Xanadu is great but I go with Cygnus X-1 this time. It was hard decision this time, but Cygnus X-1 is rather more complex and slightly "gloomy" than Xanadu and that did it.

Cygnus X-1 is good, but Xanadu is the best thing Rush ever did.

Hard choice...going with Cygnus cause it's one of the few Rush songs that suggests prog metal.

Xanadu does Kubla Khan proud.
