Topic: zappa blows petrucci away... Posted: June 15 2005 at 03:18 |
i bet not one can distinguish petrucci from any other highly skilled METAL(yeah, i said it) guitarist out there.
zappa on the other hand, was flambouyant and virtuosic to no extent, and was undeniably the most musically talented, somewhat mainstream, prog musician ever (or of those that ive heard)
he was even better than hendrix.
(im not blasting anyone in particular, just sharing thoughts)

Not blasting anyone? Yet of ALL the guitarists in the prog world you had to pick John Petrucci.

Are you saying no one could distinguish Petrucci from say Chuck Shuldiner (RIP)? Or Van Halen? Or Jarzombek? Or whichever of Jason Gobel/Paul Masvida did more guitars in Cynic? That's absurd.

Zappa blows away most rock guitarists. Period!
I can take or leave a lot of his music, but as an inovator and a musical p!ss taker he wears the crown.

Petrucci has an extremely recognizable style. A few weeks ago,
someone posted a clip of an unrecognized song, and I'd never heard it
either, but after listening to it, I realized it was Petrucci's
playing, so some research led to me realizing it was from his brand new
solo album. So you're wrong on THAT count.
However, Zappa *does* blow him and many others away. Way to be
ignorant about metal guitarists, though, many of them have very unique
styles. Douche.

Are you delirious? Your post is absolutely senseless!
You are comparring two different worlds, it's something completely different!
Jimi Hendrix? He was the first, he reinvented the electric guitar but everyone nowaday (Petrucci, Vai, Morse...etc..) is tecnically much better than JH!
...so Zappa was a music genius, but for what concern guitar tecnique he was'nt able to do a solo like modern prog guitarists, that's the fact! He was an old school guitarist, and of course a musical genius!!!
And John Petrucci is probably the most unique guitarist in prog metal scene he is really unique and personal!

You're like comparing Chuck Berry and Snoop Dog.

Petrucci is a "shredder", very technical in "sweeping" but that's all. He is a good metal guitarist but Zappa is by fare more talented, moreover he get the soul and have a stRong feeling that Petrucci dosen't have.

I agree that Zappa blows away most other guitarists.
To me, it is that his solos are interesting, and are, at least the released instances, actually the compositions of the moment that Zappa was striving to achieve. His solos don't feel like traditional solos, they feel like an additional movement of the piece, not just linking devices or intrumental bridges.
There are obviously other examples of guitarists who have done this, but Zappa's work always seems to me to be the least 'safe', in so far as non-jazz pieces are concerned.
Just my opinion....

Bad comparison.

Pointless comparison, I agree, but I have to admit I've never seen all
the fuss about Zappa's guitar playing. I rate him much higher as a
COMPOSER than I do as a musician.

I disagree with the thread topic. Zappa does not blow away Petrucci at all. In fact I prefer Petrucci to Zappa's aimless doodling!...

Zappa owns other players as far as truely inventive improvising is concerned. His solos may seem like aimless noodling, but when you take a closer look you'll find that most of what he's playing really makes sense and is not just built from a collection of licks. Few other players manage that, maybe Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Scott Henderson (and others I may not know).
I agree that Petrucci is extremly recognizable. His alternate picking and sweeping are as unique as are his chords in clean passages.

Zappa was one of the largest influences on prog and techincal music,
but he didn't really set out to be real shredder - that side of guitar
was really yet to be seen until guys like Van Halen and Satch came
along in the eities. Petrucci, on the other hand is using many
different, areas of music, to create something technical, but probably
the only reason its original is because DT is a very technically
skilled band and they can achieve many things deemed impossible. I
think i would say (and i think they would to) that they aren't pushing
the boundaries of prog music except in a shredding sense (ie they're
not really truely original like Zappa was). But it's like comparing
chalk and cheese - there is no comparison at all.

Isn't it wonderful that our lives are enriched by two such gifted
musicians! How can you even compare the two guitarists?
They are just so different! It's like
comparing Steve Hackett with Steve Vai? They are just so
different and their style fits perfectly the sort of music they
play.
When Zappa wanted a shredder he called on Vai, in any case.
I defy anyone to listen to Zappa's "Watermelon in Easter Hay" (any version!) and not be moved....
I also defy anyone to listen to Dream Theater's "As I Am" and not get blown away by Petrucci's playing.
Vive la difference!

Steve Vai and Mike Keneally were his "stunt guitarists". The greatest stunts being Approximate and Drowning Witch. I wonder how many people think that was played by Zappa ...
Speaking of Vai: Two of his archives albums are devoted exclusively to Zappa. One features the various songs he played with/for Zappa, the other one features Mike Keneally playing selected Zappa songs on the piano. GREAT stuff!

So, which do you think are better? Apples or oranges? I'm in favour of apples, personally.
