Trying to understanding "some folks" may prove the most frustrating and non-productive endeavor of one's life Wacko

Here are some facts & figures instead: Every PA-listed album has been given a few dozen negative ratings, including the Top 10 ones .. haters gonna hate. The problem with TER is that here on PA it has received fewer positive reviews than it deserves. If everybody who liked TER had bothered to invest 10 minutes of their time into sharing their opinion, its overall stats might look like these below from Amazon:

Agreed. I am puzzled as to why everyone, as in everyone, is trying to spread an LP worth of music over two records - is it because they believe that for a dumb vinyl fetishist 2LP would feel likt 2x 1LP in terms of value, or because the 30-40 year old equipment no longer can press inner grooves to a good standard of quality?

I also suspect that along with "the lost art of conversation" another important component is missing: the knack of making a complete, self-sufficient, standalone album that is not TL;DL.

If the PA stats are anything to go by, almost each one of the Top 25 albums is 45± minutes long, only the Genesis ones being 50+ minutes.

^The PA list is crazy though. It doesn't have either Yeti or Tago Mago included......and they're both clocking in about 70 minutes eachBig smile

Well, the Landmarq album i bought earlier this year (entertaining Angels) is a dbl LP, and it runs for over 100 minutes and sounds fabulous. This is fine, as you can enjoy each side for 25+ minutes straight. But TER's shorter-than-short sides don't do justice for the superb music offered. Minor quibble, it is a beautiful package.
I am led to believe that there is a more defined sound when less tracks are pressed on a side of vinyl, but longer sides sound pretty decent anyway. I'm leaning towards a more 'profitable' angle -for the record companies. Naturally, 2 LP sets warrant a higher price tag than single LP's. It's not always the case, but more than not. Maybe it is giving the prospective buyer a substantial product worth dishing out the dosh for....

Very good . I didn't expect the album to be this laid back and incredibly 'diggable'. When listening, all I want to do is transport myself to my happy-place and absorb the album. By the time I am arriving at a peace, I have to flip the album over. Had the music been more like Division Bell, where we get some more up-tempo things, probably not so much an issue, but man, this album is soooo good, I just wanna listen and relax......

Well, your PA title is Prog Reviewer .. aren't prog reviewers supposed to be reviewing prog all the time, starting early in the morning, even before having their double shot of breakfast whiskey and a cigar?

I wanted to say "all eyes are on you", but realized that in the case of my avatar this may sound a little too creepy? Stern Smile

In theory, TER is supposed to be a sequence of 4 suites, so one suite per side may make some artistic sense, but yes, WTF, I just went ahead and copied it to a 110' cassette (with Nothing Like The Sun on another side) and ripped to a CD.

We all need a personal esquire Tom. The guy/girl to tie your shoelaces on Monday mornings, make dinner when you're too tired to think, turn the record and drive you places.

Growing on me.  I need to be in a very patient mood but the other day waiting in the car for 45 minutes, it was a perfect album for drifting thoughts.

The more I listen to this album, the more I like it. And it somehow has grabbed me, I just want to listen to it more... it's been a while since an album has done that to me. So far, it might be the album I have liked best this year... though I'm afraid I haven't heard "The Road of Bones" yet... given the great reviews it has received, I hope to get that one soon.

.........so all that can be said, had been said....?
This album is just amazing. Does it miss Roger W's input.........?? Probably. Does it need Roger W's input ?? Probably not. Neither David, nor Guy, nor Kamen for that matter, can match Waters on bass, but this River album is true aural euphoria...........at least to my ears..........regardless of bassist.
I'm so sad Richard W passed so soon.....    Much more could've been attained had Wright still been with us.....

^ what are your thoughts on this one below: he liked the album, the music is good, the sound is great, so let's see what happens if we slap it with a 2-star rating .. yay, it worked!

Do you also think that TER is for hardcore PF fans only? Not for every one of them, though:

According to PA's own ranking system, The Endless River isn't ranked in the Top 84 releases of 2014. (For some reason, it only went to 84 rather than a 100. Can't be bothered to find out why.) The album's ranked at 3.60 right now, and we know it's only going to go down... down... down... down... down. It always happens that way. I predict it'll go under 3.0 and hover in the 2 range (which is what I gave it) within a few years.

There are some good songs on this album; 3 of them are keepers, for me at any rate. But 3 good songs of 18 does not make a 3 star album, let alone a 4 or 5. Wink

Everyone know its so full of manipulations and misunderstandings.

I find it interesting, how a work is received. In literary studies it's called "Reception Theory," tracing the history of how a work is, - in the case of music, - listened to, understood and appreciated (by professional critics, by audiences, by classes, by gender, etc.), and how this changes over time. It's  probably not all that interesting to most, haha.

Wrong.  Dean has explained in painstaking detail that all of the "ratings manipulations" do not amount to a hill of beans.  Even though people think they are making a big difference by doing it, he showed the math which suggests that non-weighted, non-reviewing ratings make almost no difference to an albums overall score.  Especially an album with several collab reviews under its belt.

Frankly, I agree with your first sentence, for different reasons...but the reason you give in your second sentence is not really a factor.

Here is one such explanation he made a while back due to people complaining about Anglagard manipulators.  I think he has a more comprehensive explanation elsewhere but this is the only one I could find.  The point is, all of the ratings without reviews do very little in the grand scheme....

"The silly thing is that if I analyse the data for Viljans Öga and remove the 36 ratings I believe to be bogus the average rating goes up from 4.34 to 4.35, which means the net result of all manipulation is that the average ratings for all albums is adversely affected, even those that some people firmly believe are being unfairly boosted. The reality is everyone suffers by an infinitesimally small amount, so even if we could wave a magic wand and make all the bogus ratings disappear it wouldn't change anything - every album's rating would go up by a very small percentage and the relative chart positions would move around a small amount but the overall effect would be unchanged.

So please, for the love of Prog and for Fripp's sake, forget about these rating-only scores - ignore them, deliberate rating manipulation is a futile game that achieves nothing of any significance. Reviews carry far more weight, reviews by collaborators carry even more."  -Dean

I do, and so do others; if no-one did, why have ratings in the first place?

Manipulative or extremely unfair ratings (beyond personal taste differences) may play the same role in forming public opinion as slander does. Some of us will be able to recognize a heavily biased or phony review, and promptly discredit/ignore it; others may be confused and misled.

After all that, I can agree with a 2 rating - for collectors/fans - it doesn't say it's good or bad, it could well be an excellent album for collectors/fans..... Me, I'd rate it a solid 4 - excellent addition to any Prog collection. A 2 is almost better than a 3,- good, but non- essential......
