Anyway, so I decided to do a little montage of some old school albums that have been in heavy rotation at the Guldbamsen den:

Dave, is that Xhol Caravan one with the white cover on your recent picture-gasm any good? The same vendor at one of the local record fairs has had the remastered CD of that one for about two years now, and I've been `umming' and `ahhing' whether to get it or not. I've not actually heard any of their albums at all, except for one or two video clips on an old German rock/prog/Kraut doco.

Hey, guys, just bought and heard for the first time, Faust's "Tapes". What a trip! I have the version that is all one track. I love the synth work, and there are actually some neat jazz type sections.

Wouldn't have figured you for a Faust man, but then again you do have a thing for those early German albums, if I recall. Tapes is kind of a mish mash between all the different styles Faust were dishing out at the time, only here glued together as one continuous whole. If you like it, you're most likely going to enjoy IV and So Far as well.

I love that album - it was my first Faust album and remains my favorite. It's very noisy and chaotic most of the time, but the "song" parts are sprinkled around at strategic intervals to give the whole thing a more palatable shape.

Oh and that Et Cetera album (along with the follow up Knirsch) comes highly recommended!

Featuring Wolfgang Dauner widely known as being to jazz what Faust were to rock. On here he's joined by the Exmagma guys wielding a particularly well played fusion take on Krautrock, interspersed with wild Eastern phrasing and instrumentation. Knirsch even sports both Larry Corryel and John Hiseman for extra kicks. I don't think I've heard either playing on a more experimental record, but it works - uuuuuuh baby how it works!

I got the CD for $2 off ebay several months back, only spun it briefly at the time, but am about to launch into giving it a proper listen. I seem to recall it was quite electronic and metallic? I thought it sounded very different for them, not sure if I liked it either. Also, my Duul collection is a bit fragmented, I had up to `Pyragony X', then I don't own `Only Human' and `Almost Alive' just before this one, so it's a jarring jump in sound from them for me!

it has its moments.......Not much to do with their more 'typical' stuff. Maybe on par with Pyragony X. I don't mind those later 70's albums, always full of surprises. They had such an obscure way of 'writing' songs - like we'll have a simple verse/chorus thing to begin, we'll jump to an unexpected key and throw in some weird stuff, then return to verse/chorus......
