Well, I bought my UA copy, with textured gatefold sleeve, around 1990, a beautiful example, for a measly 8 Aussie dollars. Anyway, their improvs on record 2 are outstanding. I mean, every member just telepathically locked in with one another, a total excercise in listening to each other, knowing what's going to happen next and anticipating who will do what. Probably all on acid, all on the same wavelength, producing nothing less than a true MASTERPIECE.
I simply worship Yeti.

Yeti is my favorite album by them.....I also have Phallus Dei and several of the later ones also but not Tanz Der Lemmings. Is Tanz as good as Yeti overall?
Tanz was my favorite for many years, but lately Yeti has taken over.  Yeti is much more aggressive, and maybe better for it.  Tanz is an effort to piece together elaborate suites from a variety of musical themes, and though that helps it scream "prog!", the years of listening to it have revealed the seams and flaws.  But it's still a very close second to Yeti for me.  I'd classify it as a more introverted counterpart to the more overt physicality of Yeti.

Amon Duul 2 - Vortex:
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4732

I got the CD for $2 off ebay several months back, only spun it briefly at the time, but am about to launch into giving it a proper listen. I seem to recall it was quite electronic and metallic? I thought it sounded very different for them, not sure if I liked it either. Also, my Duul collection is a bit fragmented, I had up to `Pyragony X', then I don't own `Only Human' and `Almost Alive' just before this one, so it's a jarring jump in sound from them for me!

Wish me luck with it!

Best of luck to you anyhow. Electronic sounds good though!

it has its moments.......Not much to do with their more 'typical' stuff. Maybe on par with Pyragony X. I don't mind those later 70's albums, always full of surprises. They had such an obscure way of 'writing' songs - like we'll have a simple verse/chorus thing to begin, we'll jump to an unexpected key and throw in some weird stuff, then return to verse/chorus......

Oh and that Et Cetera album (along with the follow up Knirsch) comes highly recommended!
Featuring Wolfgang Dauner widely known as being to jazz what Faust were to rock. On here he's joined by the Exmagma guys wielding a particularly well played fusion take on Krautrock, interspersed with wild Eastern phrasing and instrumentation. Knirsch even sports both Larry Corryel and John Hiseman for extra kicks. I don't think I've heard either playing on a more experimental record, but it works - uuuuuuh baby how it works!

As for Amon Duul "Vortex", I've only listened to it a couple of times and couldn't find a lot of good things about it.  It's been a long time since I heard it.

I love that album - it was my first Faust album and remains my favorite.  It's very noisy and chaotic most of the time, but the "song" parts are sprinkled around at strategic intervals to give the whole thing a more palatable shape.

Hey DougSmile
Wouldn't have figured you for a Faust man, but then again you do have a thing for those early German albums, if I recall. Tapes is kind of a mish mash between all the different styles Faust were dishing out at the time, only here glued together as one continuous whole. If you like it, you're most likely going to enjoy IV and So Far as well.

It is extremely worth getting! I consider it a minor Krautrock classic myself. Almost went for the fifth star in my review but didn't. I know Philippe did thoughBig smile Great jazzy murky organ driven psych music with loads of submarinish quality to the organs. All I can say is buy it, like in immediately, and if you don't like it, I'll tie my shoes together and cry for 8 minutes.

Oh and there it is on ze Jootoob.

One of the albums I've played the most of the listed above has to be Galactic Supermarket. I think I prefer it over the selftitled debut tbh. What a gem! Love everything about it. Also includes one of the most unlikely of Schulze performances ever, and I just love it.
