The new single. If the song I got to hear from Yes's forthcoming album served to lower my expectations for that album, this one has elevated my expectations for this one... they might just as well make an album just the way I want it. |

Finally got a chance to listen to the new song the other day. Kinda hoping that's not considered a high point on the album, but the guitar solo at the end made me very happy.

I quite liked that, possibly more than anything on Heritage, despite it being a bit straightforward it works very nicely. My expectations for Pale Communion are going up.
That video was amazing, loved the animation. |

The single is nice, quite catchy and has a nice rhythm. Its not earth shattering by any means. However "Eternal rains will come" has been leaked and its sounds much better than the single. Its both catchier and more complex at the same time. My hopes for the album are high :-)
Oh and someone needs to change the album artwork cause its wrong. You can see the new and official one here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/44/Opeth_Pale_Communion_album_artwork.jpg To be honest I preferred the fake album artwork |

I bet the Blu-ray of this album is going to sound epically magnificent. |

No growls and collaborating with Wilson. Sounds awesome to me.

Wow. Just heard cusp of eternity. Magnificent fast rhythms and has an oriental flavour. Brilliant music and superb vox. Love that one.

I miss the growls, so so much, part of what made Opeth who they were. However, I love Damnation, and from what I've heard so far this seems like a good return to form after Heritage, Heritage left me freezing cold.

"Eternal Rains Will Come" is officially released from Roadrunner Records and it's quite beautiful. My expectations for this album are out the roof...

I just got the album... I find it strange that reviews from the album haven't yet overwhelmed PA, and that there's not been any new comments about it here. However, to say anything more about it I must listen to it more times. I got it with Yes's new album (strange, it took a good while for the Yes album to arrive here, but the Opeth one arrived even before there started to be much talk about it around here).

The whole album is supposed to be streaming via Roadrunner Records ahead of its official release on August 25: http://prog.teamrock.com/news/2014-08-18/opeth-stream-pale-communion.
Unfortunately the player that has been embedded on the site seems as dead as a dodo in both IE9 and Chrome browsers at the moment, so hopefully that will be fixed shortly... Mainman Mikael Akerfeldt recently told how he’d first thought of calling the record Nux Vomica after a herbal remedy used to treat those suffering from light and sound sensitivity. He said: "It comes from the same tree that produces the poison strychnine. I liked how it looked and everything. But then somebody read about the side effects, and it was erection problems and constipation. “I figured, ‘That's going be the first question in interviews,’ – and I thought it was maybe not a good title after all." Pale Communion is available for pre-order via Amazon and iTunes. Opeth return to the UK in October: Oct 10: Bristol O2 Academy Oct 11: London Roundhouse Oct 12: Nottingham Rock City Oct 14: Glasgow O2 ABC Oct 15: Manchester Academy Oct 16: Birmingham Institute Tracklist: 1. Eternal Rains Will Come 2. Cusp of Eternit 3. Moon Above, Sun Below 4. Elysian Woes 5. Goblin 6. River 7. Voice of Treason 8. Faith in Others |

Cool... so, somehow I ended up being able to get it over a week before it's official release. Now the store that I visit ended up makig up to me for taking so long on getting the new Yes album... and I ended up buying them together. As it is, I have been enjoying the Opeth album much more... and I expect my apreciation of it to grow through repeated listening... while I'm afraid I don't expect to like Heaven and Earth much more; perhaps I'll grow to sort of like one or two songs from it, but I don't expect much more.

The teamrock.com stream is now working ok, and in case it goes on the blink again, here is another source of the album stream: http://pitchfork.com/advance/519-pale-communion/.

Local record store will have the vinyl version on Wednesday.....Road Runner does not have the best sounding releases so I am hoping Wilson puts his magic touch on this one.

Have the album on cd. After the debacle that was Heritage (for me atleast) I am positively surprised by the music on Pale Communion. As any good Opeth album it is a grower, and after a few spins this album feels very well thought out.
I have one big problem with the album, namely the mixing. It is way too bass heavy. Both the bass and the bass drum are too much in your face. I'm hoping the vinyl release is better, but I doubt it. I've always enjoyed Wilson's mixing, so I wonder what the deal is here? It's a shame, because the mixing is really preventing me from enjoying this album fully.

Any thoughts on new album?
Apart from Cusp of Eternity which is ok-ish, the rest is excellent IMO, one of the best things in 2014. |

I think it's the best album they've released since Blackwater Park (shows how little I think of the intervening 5 albums). Its very good but not worth the 5 stars, the production is a little lacking. I think they might have been trying too hard to get that 70's sound and missed that guitars really do need to be pushed well forwards at times, still a heavy album without really being metal.

Could this be the album I've been waiting for them to release since Ghost Reveries? We'll see, I'll have to order this soon.
