That's the Barney i know & love!
L.O. me ole China!  How the phook are you in bloody ole England these days???

@Roland: I think 5.1 has passed a point of critical mass.  Not sure TFK will ever go 5.1 but everybody else seems to(as far as prog)  I have Steven Wilson's Raven in 5.1 and Drive Home is beyond belief.

@infandus:  congrats on selling your condo!  When you set up your surround you will not be let down, I assure you!

@ZumaBaby: You nailed it:  Neal Morse's lyrics are very naive.  That is the best way to put it and it says it all.

Ok, so I get it, (I think).

2.0 refers to stereo speakers or two speakers.

5.1 refers to five speakers, 4 surround soun and a subwoofer.  Where does the .1 come from.

And seriously, you're going to be waiting a long time for new artists to have the cash resources to do 5.1.  There just isn't enough of a demand.  Seriously, if every Flower King fan bought a 5.1 remix of The Chicken Farmer, while yes, that would be a great thing, but there's a pretty good chance Mr. Stolt would still lose money on the enterprise.

Well, I know that early FK stuff will soon be re-released on vinyl, so I don't think 5.1 is in the picture for Roine.

Tom, the .1 is the subwoofer.  Surround uses a front left and right, a center channel, two surround channels and a subwoofer.  We still haven't set up my girlfriends surround sound system, but it's only been 4 1/2 years, so give us some time Wink  Actually, we are very actively looking to move to a bigger place (townhouse is already sold), so that will be one of the first things I do when we move.  Then I'll need some 5.1 mixes.........I guess I have a couple, PTree and the last Steven Wilson solo album.

I do have big plans to get all you Pilgrims into 5.1.

Did I scare away barney again??? LOL

Seriously, sorry I've been away.  I really have nothing to say these days about 2.0 music.  So much new 5.1 remixes out there.  I've been "surrounded" by surround sound, no lie.

Oh, I wasn't aware he is Tom too

Hi there.  Smile

Amusingly enough, I knew Roj was talking about me as the Mellotron debate comes up every once in a while, so I didn't even consider you as 'Tom' despite the obvious handle staring at me.  Embarrassed

Glad to see some of the old gang here.  I'm going to read Roland's review of Whirlwind shortly.  I thought that album was overblown…especially the ending.  However, it did seem to be more collaborative.  The overture is classic and the production is really good.  I love the cover art too.  Kscope was one of my most anticipated albums this year and I found it to be such a disappointment.  There were some good moments like the key solos, involving Daniel and Pete's Beatlesque part.  Other than that I'm just over Morse's naive lyrics.  It's laughable.  My hope is that they wait until they have some good ideas before they try again.

That TA release kind of sent me packing for a while.  My listening has consisted of Neil Young, Pat Metheny and Pandora.  Seeing you good folks back on the board has inspired me to put on some classic TA.

@Roland, I'd love to see a review of DR.  Let us know when you do.  I do wonder what's on the horizon for Roine :-)

I've had Stardust We Are in the car the past couple week..........still an incredible album (though still a couple tunes that I find "lesser" in their catalog).  I think my problem is I started listening to them right at the end of the initial phase of great albums (right after the release of Flower Power), so those first 4 (or 5, if you count The Flower King, which I usually do) albums are the standard by which I always judge the rest of their albums.  Space Revolver was up to those standards......Rainmaker and Adam and Eve were not.  Even though I love Unfold, that was when things really changed.  I was happy with Paradox Hotel, and I still say that Sum is the closest they've come since to the classic early albums that I still love so much.  The most recent two just don't reach the heights of the early albums, or even the ones I mentioned above.  Not bad, I can enjoy them while I listen, but just not up to what I consider their best work.

As to TA, well, I've never been a huge fan.  Kaleidoscope makes me think I won't buy anything else by them without hearing it first (assuming there is anything else coming........last I heard from Roine, there were no plans).

The Mellotron wouldn't fit underneath my bed . . .

No seriously, I love the Mellotron on older albums, stuff from the 70's.  I just think that it's overused on albums from the teens when technology has advanced so far.  I did love The Raven but was just appaled that Steven Wilson was all proud of using Fripp's old Mellotron for the album.  There's really no need to do that other than to say 'hey, look how cool I am'.

I've got a Roland that I bought three years ago that can do a pretty good imitation of a Mellotron at about a tenth of the weight and a fraction of the maintenance costs.
