Think it's the very presence of such a sound in that decade that a lot of people react to, positively. Beyond the sound, though, the compositional substance is not very alluring. As you said, the constant and seemingly unrelated shifts end up making it difficult to sit through. Cert1fied covered the rough gist of my views in his review, have similar thoughts on the album.

I agree with that .....and I have always thought they were a bit overrated (not to get into a ratings argument. again on PA..)
I like the overall sound but often their songwriting just doesn't do a lot for me.

Atmosphere and the general tension in the music. It does have it roots in early seventies symph rock but then the only album its remotely like is Trespass from what I've heard. The band get a few extra kudos for being the first to emerge from the embryonic Scandinavian prog rock scene that included Anekdoten, Par Lindh and The Flower Kings. So its sort of an In The Court Of The Crimson King for the 90's. Its also respected a lot for helping reboot traditional symphonic prog rock.

Ok. A better answer maybe. For the longest time I wasn't really that into instrumental music (whole albums worth I mean, individual instrumental songs were fine), that was a taste I developed much later. However, I've always loved Snow Goose, thought it was beautifully put together and written and for the longest time that was the only instrumental album I liked). It could hold my interest for 45 minutes without any words which was shocking to me as someone who thought lyrics were necessary at least to some degree to make an album interesting. Snow Goose was really my lead in to eventually coming to enjoy instrumental music. Next stop woulld be Oldfield and Ant Phillips instrumental work.

I think The Snow Goose is my favorite instrumental album of all time. I like to listen to it each winter.

Eerie apocalyptic beautiful shoegazing violin music. I guess it's special because Godspeed is truly a unique band, not that their aren't a ton of other post rock bands, I just haven't found anything quite like GYBE, and Skinny Fists is their best work.

We can do both albums at once. We make the rules here! (well sometimes)

Haha, no one responded to the GYBE question so I thought I'd give it a nod, probably just because I like it a little more than the Snow Goose, no disrespect to Camel. Moonmadness is a 5 star for me.

Snow Goose bores me while LYSF is just a journey of sound. Mesmerizing sorrow and beauty.

There's nothing really special about Snow Goose. It has some good moments and it's a pretty nice change for once in a while, but I'm not blown at all back by it. Much prefer Mirage, but still glad that I bought it for the occasional listen
That Godspeed album just bores me though. The first few minutes of "Storm" were alright but I still think I could have written it myself. I struggle to finish listening to the whole thing now, and would prefer just about any Sigur Ros album over it any day. Maybe I'll give it another try tomorrow

I know no-one really bothers with these anymore, but...
What's so special about Swans - Children Of God?
It's one of the best albums from their early period but does it really deserve to be the greatest post/math-rock album on PA? The Seer is miles better IMO, and it probably wouldn't make my top 5 Swans albums. Anyways, what do you guys think about it?

As you said, it's one of Swans best pre-hiatus material. While i agree that The Seer is better, i think the Seer takes a bit more of an acquired taste to thoroughly enjoy unlike COG.
I don't think it should be #1 either. I personally would like to see an album more deeply rooted in PR and MR like Sigur Ros, GY!BE, Don Caballero, etc.

It's pretty absurd that an album added a few months ago, with only 22 votes, should be so high. But there you go.

Not too much...and I say that as a massive Camel fan. Moonmadness or Mirage any day of the week, but Snow Goose requires a particular mood for me. "Migration" is still my favorite track, though.

This thread is breaking up!
Since we're on The Snow Goose splinter at the mome, It's special to me in the form of it's live component, from A Live Record, which I prefer. I was working the night shift at a plastics factory, making Scope mouthwash bottles from 11:00pm to 8:00am. Open the sliding door, remove the injection molded blanks, put them in a box, close the door, stare into the distance for 56 seconds, repeat. For 4 hours. Take a 3:00 am lunch break. Repeat for 4 more hours.
That 3:00am lunch break was like heaven. I sat in my car and listened to that album every night for about a month. Luckily it triggers my memories of that hour of heaven and not the 8 hours of hell.
Then I went home and watched a Popeye cartoon and went to bed.

The "A Live Record" version features David Bedford conducting the orchestra and it's a very special moment in time. The style of Snow Goose has a very subtle approach and some of the atmospheric sections of it are in vain of Mike Oldfield's writing. Maybe the style of the composition is not personally appealing to people. It took me a few months to appreciate it. It can definitely be suggested to a person who is having a mood swing.
