IQ are taking center stage in my music listening these days.

The Road Of Bones has surprised the hell out of me. IQ have done everything right on this album and they have definitely built a stronger sound foundation from their previous album, Frequency.

I also really admire Mike Holmes's dedication to diversify with the use of his guitar sound.
I certainly enjoy the Kentucky Mandolin and Banjo on fall and rise, Until The End and the astoundingly diverse 'Hardcore.'

The reality is you can't as more from a band that is 30+ years-old.
I think IQ have done a tremendous job by still keeping the listener interested and creating some different walls of sounds.

I'll probably get around to reviewing it this weekend. A solid 4 stars i'd say and that rating will be for the main disc as I just don't include bonus tracks or discs in my evaluation. Yes the bonus disc is very good. I haven't bothered yet to check into this but is this really a concept album? I enjoy that sampled mellotron(at least I think it's sampled) and the bass and drumming especially. A safe album i'd say but really enjoyable.

Hello, Neil from IQ here...

I just thought I'd pop in and thank everyone for the interesting feedback for 'The Road Of Bones' in this thread.  It's really interesting to know what people think, and useful feedback for us.

We're delighted to discover that we have been nominated in two categories in the 2014 "Prog" magazine Progressive Music Awards, for Best Album (The Road of Bones) and Best Anthem (From The Outside In).  If you've enjoyed the new album, we'd be deeply grateful if you could head over here and send a vote in our direction!!

Thanks again!

Neil

I of course voted for IQ. No question or doubts. Saw the list and immediately I knew IQ was the winner for me.
I just hope they win. Really deserve it this time around. :)

That album edition is such a real treasure. I got so much out of it. I even loved the liner notes and explanations from mike Holmes on how he transferred the music from the original master tapes, which ironically enough were found in an attic!
How beautiful and fitting. Enjoy man.

Just thought I'd chime in here on the new one.  Got it last week, have listened to both CD's.  Main thing I notice is that Nichols just seems to get better the older he gets (the opposite of most singers).  Also, as other's have mentioned, Durant's keys really make this album shine, which is interesting since he's replacing the master, Martin Orford.

Anyway, I like the CD's about equally for now, though I need quite a few more listens to really get into this thing.  First CD is quite dark, of course, but that can be a very good thing for me if I'm in the mood.  "Bonus" CD is much more varied, though really I think they should have just called it a double album and been done with it since all of the tracks are of such high quality.  Great comeback album for Cookie and Esau.

You know, I did some searching around and I can't find any mention of it by any members of the band on their web site or elsewhere referring to any sort of concept.  The "Road Of Bones" is an actual thing though, so maybe it relates to this?  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/1404085/Road-of-Bones-where-slaves-perished.html

Well well well , after all these years...I'd always wondered about the track "Wurensh" on Are you Sitting Comfortably - and always thought it was another German word for efficiency or summat (certainly not comedy anyway!). Anyway - as I was entering the CD details into my catalogue on my PC, I realised that the Producer is Terry Brown (Ring a Bell???)and apparently the track name is an anagram of "New Rush" - you learn something new (and in this case reasonably trivial) every day!!!

Yes, the "New Rush" thing is funny, mainly because IQ doesn't sound like Rush! I guess it wouldn't be unfathomable to draw some sonic parallels between that album and '85-'87 Rush, though (and The Police, another band '80s Rush was compared to).

Probably a little joke at the expense of the music critics at the time, who typically couldn't tell their Rush from their ELP and so liked to compare neo-prog bands to random prog bands from the past without really considering how they actually sounded.

Ah well - IQ did have at least three male musicians....who play guitars, keyboards, bass and drums......to a typical pop music critic that's all they needed to classify them as a Rush tribute band
