I just listened to Hold Your Fire (which I hadn't heard for 20+ years coz I didn't like it much). Darn it - I think it's consistently great !! I only liked Force Ten years ago but now I'm going to catch up on it !! The track Open Secrets is a real winner. Maybe it sounded a bit 'grown up' to my young ears back then, but it's almost perfect now !!!

We were talking about comics and just for the heck of it I googled Rush comics and a link to these Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-2 comics came up.  I thought that this would be interesting to share.  http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/comicbook-cygnus-x1-b1.php

Nice plug by Geddy on some early influences to their writing and playing...I will post the link but not sure it will be active as you have to sign up.

“I was really interested in all the developments in that area of music. Things were moving very fast and I liked what it might do for our music. Alex wasn’t at all enthusiastic. Well, he was the guitarist, so felt we should still be focused around that. But I really believed that if we were to have anything to offer in the new decade, then what we needed to do was explore different sounds.

“We’d also discovered more progressive bands like Yes, Van der Graaf Generator and King Crimson. They inspired us to think about making music more complex and challenging. The trick was to find some way of combining these influences with our own personalities, so what you got was definitely still about us.”

I agree...we all have to laugh more...

"So, just what is the secret behind Rush’s enduring career, and how have the trio managed to stay together for so long without killing each other?

“It’s not been easy! Of course, there are moments when we’ve fallen out. But the trick is that we all know how well we work together. We have also become very good at giving each other space to breathe. Ultimately, we are three individuals who can come together and create something special. But it doesn’t take over our lives. And at the end of the day, we can still have a good laugh about anything. Perhaps that’s the secret to longevity: learn to laugh!”

IMO the 4 tracks in the central part of the album are really well written, and flow beautifully; they are one of my fav portions of all their albums - glad you like open secrets as i love that track too. Clap

I have always enjoyed HYF, sure it is different. But I agree there are some excellent songs on that album.

Well written and performed from start to finish, I can listen to the whole albums without skipping anything.
Open Secrets is a great title too....

An esteemed co-worker introduced me to Rush (more than 25 years ago)lending me Moving Pictures, Signals and Hold Your Fire : Couldn't stand that voice initially but kept listening. Didn't liked Pictures and Signals at first but for some reasons it clicked with HYF. This one and Show of Hands are def my 2 most played Rush record.

Been cranking EMOTION DETECTOR lately.

Love everything about that tune, especially the intro. :)

Emotion Detector is great. One of the best songs off that album. It's right behind Mystic Rythmns for me

The intro always reminds me of Blade Runner for some reason.

Wanted to toss out a book recommendation -

Assuming you love Rush...and 80s pop culture and 80s movies...and also RPGs/MMOs...with a nod towards virtual reality... you might enjoy a book called

"Ready Player One"

An easy read...reads at the level of Hunger Games...maybe a bit above. Great for the beach since summer is here. Very nostalgic and I read lots of it with a very big grin.

While that's right up there, I've always liked Grand Designs and Territories a bit more. Of course, the whole albums amazing and is one of my favorite Rush albums (behind Grace Under Pressure).

Geddy's bassline in "Marathon" is so decadent, it'll give your ears diabetes. "The Big Money" is amazing, as is "Middletown Dreams."

Power Windows: another album produced by the band at the height of their powers.

I must say, they're not doing too shabby nowadays, eh!
