The United States collectively yawns as the world's most important sporting event starts.

Real Madrid is playing Manchester United at Michigan Stadium on August 2nd, and the entire stadium sold out in one day, so there is something to be said for that.  Myself, I'll probably watch a couple of matches and probably keep an eye on ESPN to follow what is going on, but don't suspect that I will be losing any sleep to watch any matches like is happening in other areas of the world.  Probably won't be calling in sick to work in order to catch any matches either.

I won't be calling in sick either. Because I already have about 3 days off approved plus I get to make my schedule this month  so my hours will be quite WC-friendly TongueTongue

Man Croatia must be kicking themselves, they were so close. Is Brazil just nervous 'cause it's the first game and they are the hosts or is Croatia that good. I'm not a football fan per se...well every couple of years(European Cup/World Cup) but Brazil just didn't look as dominant as I thought they would. Still 3-1 is a good result for them but the score doesn't show how close this really was.

Well I suppose it was important for the tournament that Brazil got off to a good start but hopefully that's the last obvious help they'll get from refs! Neymar could easily have been sent off for the elbow on Modric and as for that penalty, the words "complete" and "joke" come to mind.

Heard an interview with one of the Croatian players and he was saying when they spoke to the referee he just spoke back in Japanese!  Not sure how many current players speak Japanese?

It's about time that FIFA gave up on this ridiculous idea that refs should come from around the world (whatever the cost) and that refs are chosen on the grounds of experience  and quality.  It's nice that these guys get their chance, but this is THE World Cup ffs and is pretty important that decisions are correct.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Since when did Joga bonito accomodate conning the ref and your fellow professionals? If Brazil were even half as good as their deluded fans keep telling us they wouldn't have to stoop to this. Neymar should have walked for the elbow but there are clearly far too many vested interests in keeping his scrawny little overhyped poster boy ass as on the field for the full 90 minutes. (but then if your manager is a criminal what can you expect?) A draw would have been a fair result all said.

Mind you the Croatian goalie was awful, he legitimately should have saved all three goals.

Do you think there’s much doping in football? The notorious Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes said in December 2010 that "If I would talk, the Spanish football team would be stripped of the 2010 World Cup".

I say nothing is nothing

Horrible. Just horrible. They might as well award Brazil the trophy.

Preferences for today: obviously, Spain (among my three favorites though I still think horrible Brazil will win the cup). And: Cameroon (Lord Alex Song) and Chile (Alexis)

Basically this World Cup seems to be when the FIFA finally said "f**k it, let's just make it real obvious we decide who wins and who loses".
