Jumping in here. Power Windows for me the best 80's album, even the cover is special. Territories and Mystic Rhythms never cease to amaze me. I am a huge Genesis fan as you know but in retrospect I don't think any band managed the changes of the 80's decade more consistently than Rush. | One thing about Power Windows is Alex's playing is so engaging. I still can't forget the first time I heard the solo to Big Money, it sent chills down my spine. Territories and Mystic Rhythms are great, too. For some reason, I get a sense of longing and even sadness in Power Windows. Am I the only one who hears this perhaps?

Don't know about sadness but his style had really become his own by then with those restrained phrases and neat noises; we hear it as far back as Permanent Waves, more so on Signals and GUP (which he plays beautifully on, one of the few things I really like about that record).

As a guitarist myself (for 22 years now I believe), Lifeson has been a huge influence on me since I started playing. Yes, he's a master of coloring and texture, especially on those albums where the keyboards became more prominent. And I was more or less talking about the music on Power Windows having a feeling of longing and sadness. I don't normally associate such emotions when listening to Rush, but for some reason Power Windows sounded this way to me. Without getting too vague or whatever, the music seems to paint a picture for me and gives me the feeling like when I look at a painting from Picasso's 'blue period'. Anyway, now I've really made a fool of myself. Carry on everyone! Maybe Catcher can kind of relate to what I'm talking about? Ah, who knows...

You need to qualify this i.e whose folk music and if any influence could be deemed 'silly' how much credibility can be gained by pursuing what you deem to be a 'gimmick'?
|
Referring to the Blackguards, Korpiklaanis etc of the world. Well, maybe not "silly" as much as it's usually integrated clumsily into the other components of the music even in more serious bands like Moonsorrow and early Nokturnal Mortum.
