If what you are trying to say is that the American intellectual tradition is itself derived from European (Western) thought, that's not quite the same thing as saying America has NO intellectual tradition (which seems to imply that no intellectual activity takes place in America).

The whole thing could be a language one you know... Depending on where the original guy was coming from, "you have no culture" can mean "you are ignorant" and that's what that guy could have been really saying instead of "you have no cultural tradition". Even though "Americans are ignorant" is a generalization too, and an erroneous one, that's more of a typical impression that some have in the world than "Americans have no cultural tradition" because even haters don't deny it, or at least acknowledge it quite respectable past (even if they later attack the destruction of everybody's culture but current American commercialism).

Just trying to interpret things...

Thanks for the visceral reaction, everybody! Clap

I was going to spend a hour of my time to write something for something that I was discussing with my friend on a music forum, but I think I'm going to delete all my posts here in this thread.

Deleted!Tongue

I was having a discussion with my friend, whose family came over here on the Mayflower, about this particular curious topic a day before. He didn't think I was being anti-American. He considers America to have limited intellectual culture, but rich culture elsewhere in creating popular and commercial culture (which I tend to agree with).

On a side note, I laughed when he said that we should nominate Jean-Jacques Rosseau as the next nominee for the Democratic Party. LOL

He did, kind of similar to what I said (but with Dean's more elaborated and appropriate verbiage Tongue) but sadly I missed it since was in previous pages

Resulting in the rebirth of a comment that roughly said, "Deleted"

Because after he expressed his sadness about our not reading his posts after one of my posts I assumed he was referring to a post with kind-of similar ideas. I browsed and found that post. Yes, that's how all this happened.

Where gravity's influence is seen, a post there must have been.

^ Except my 'friend' in the OP is from the Philippines, so the attitude was coming from a non-European
