Happy birthday Pete! Born on this day 19th May 1945, Pete Townshend, guitar, vocals, The Who, (1965 UK No.2 single 'My Generation' 1967 US No.9 single 'I Can See For Miles' plus over 20 other UK Top 40 hit singles, 16 US Top 40 singles and rock opera albums 'Tommy' & 'Quadrophenia'). Townshend became known for his eccentric stage style during the band's early days, swinging his right arm against the guitar strings in his signature move; a windmill style, often smashing guitars on stage.

Rock seems an entirely undeserving art-form to have been graced by such a brilliant songwriter and thinker. Pete is on the cusp of proving that angry young men from the 70's can continue to play music into their 70's with dignity, relevance and a hard won wisdom. A full empty glass to you Pete

ah well he should not be alone anymore as a single double-album he mostly came up with became a milestone when it was released on this day back in 1969:
![]() here's the whole background of it in a nutshell: or if you want an actual documentary on this matter, here's the full "Sensation: The Story of Tommy": and also, join in on the poll to see which song from the album is the best that i myself put up: |

Also, Mr Townshend was invented that controlled feedback and used electronics for the first time in Rock ( Who's Next ) - in really majestic way... so, he is the greatest innovator in Rock. edit: Of course, I meant "Rock" as a subgenre, not *rock* as an umbrella for all of the subgenres (of rock music). ...and just as a decor... ...an unique show. Amoreuse (16:40 - 21:35) is my fav tune from this live allbum.

^As much as I adore Pete, you are giving him far too much credit. He certainly wasn't the first to incorporate electronics in rock music. That's just factually wrong. Silver Apples and White Noise did so much much earlier, and I haven't even scratched the surface of the German artists, who did more for the marriage of rock and electronics than any other nationality.....and again well before good ol Pete

Got to give it up for the man. He wrote intelligent concept albums and is a sixties icon. I amazed that he even survived the sixties!!

I know that Mr Townshend wasn't the first guy who get an idea to play a bit with synthesizers; there's always something *before*. However, electronic music owes its glorious entry into Rock to Mr Townshend without a question. Of course, I had in mind BOR and WGFA - which is incidentally one of the best political songs in Rock. Again, I note that when I said "Rock" in my previous post, I didn't think about the rock music in general terms which would include progressive rock too, with all of its styles from symphonic rock to krautrock. Actually, I mentioned "Rock" as the subgenre what represents the bands as The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Queen, Boston, and so on. Maybe now in the time of so many tags, it sounds weird, but back then in the seventies, the term "Rock" is meant both that distinct genre represented by above mentioned bands, and also the term *rock* meant an umbrella for the whole rock music. Liverpool University, October 1971. This may be the first time that BOR was played live.

^I was thinking of rock when I wrote my post because as you said someone always beats someone to the punch when it comes to innovation but if Pete was indeed the first synth recorded rock artist, I'll be completely floored as I a already admire the man on so many levels.

As you know, Mr Townshend was not only played a synth solos at Who's Next; he grafted that minimalistic music composer Terry Riley's piece of music A Rainbow In Curved Air into a classic rock form.. Of course, there is also his fantastic synth work at Her Majesty Quadrophenia, as well as he was played nothing less exiting synths at Tommy soundtrack where he re-writed that pretty flat original album from 1969. Also, Mr Townshend was experimenting with electronics on Endless Wire the album released in 2006, and again it's masterfully grafted on a rock form. There is a huge list of beautiful things what that genius was invented in Rock. Edited by Svetonio - June 02 2014 at 20:22 |

^Going to have to have to go with Guldbamsan on this one. I did some checking and Silver Apples as well as the Germans beat Pete to the Rock punch but everyone can be the fist man to step foot on the (Keith)
