The music of such people as Sun Ra, Funkadelic, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Afrika Bambaataa can be gathered together under the umbrella name of Afrofuturism. The four examples I have given might usually be regarded as, respectively, jazz, funk, reggae, and hip-hop. But all four (and numerous others like them) also have their Afrofuturist side. We here at PA might call it Space Rock, but none of these are Space Rock.

I haven't heard Afrika Bambaataa beyond Soul Sonic Force, but that track is pretty infamous for it's sample of Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk.
George Clinton is one pretty out there dude. You might be on to something with Funkintelecky. Funk it sure is, but that sound is damn near unclassifiable.
Afro-futurism I can't say, but if we're talking space rock I think your list is woefully incomplete with out the true space rocker of the reggae scene King Tubby. He's the originator of dub from back in the 60s-70s! His sound is so before it's time. While on the topic, what about Fela Kuti for Jazz-rock/fusion? Edited by R-A-N-M-A - May 17 2014 at 17:47 |

I wonder if Sun Ra and company were an influence on the Nuwaubian Nation religious movement mixing Ancient Egyptian polytheism, Islamic fundamentalism and UFOlogy with black nationalism being the conceptual glue holding it all together.
