Yours is no Disgrace - The Yes Album - 1971. My first encounter with Progressive Rock. Somehow, life was never the same after that. I think it rewired my brain and I have been thankful for it ever since.

Dancing With The Moonlit Knight by Genesis.
Oh and some other tunes by Genesis. But they have already been mentioned in this thread so I won't repeat them.

^I've actually never heard anything live from Le Orme, although I just read Michael's (Aussie-Byrd) review here the other day. I may have to look for that 1997 clip on YouTube, thanks man
![]() Oh and I moved this thread to lists.

oh yes that Le Orme piece is pure prog joy! The live version from a prog festival in 1997 was what turned me on to Le Orme in the first place

It's not blues (let alone typical blues), and calling it muzak would be a bit harsh, no? Yes, West of Hollywood is one of Steely Dan's more ambitious tracks, and at a push could be called prog... Just. Once again hardly screaming it. I think many of us here who know Steely Dan well would say they have their proggy moments, but overall, they're not a prog rock band. Edit: Damn, I got into a "is it prog?" discussion. I was doing well not bothering with this sh*t, ya know. ![]() Edited by irrelevant - April 24 2014 at 20:23 |

Proggy jazz rock. That band sounds really cool! I'll investigate them further coz I really quite enjoyed that. Shame about the production. Hopefully it sounds a bit better not on youtube. |

Svetonio, thats much better....
Now consider what a critic of Prog Rock might call "screaming prog". Rock critics have always pointed to two things in particular that they find distressing about prog. One, it is "mature" (i.e. also complex, sophisitated, etc) rather than "adolescent". And two, it is non-blues based. Rock purists insist that true rock be grounded in the adolescent experience and be blues based (shooting themselves IMHO in the foot for suggesting that true rock cannot be "mature". Ye God, man - lets stumble through those three chords one more time, OK - and once we've mastered those and are ready to move on, we can no longer consider ourselves to be true rock musicians but uppity types now?)
Anyway, so then "screaming" prog would then be the least adolescent and the least blues based music in all of rock. With that in mind, I might nominate Gentle Giant as the definative screaming prog band. Why, because its the band that i picture ROCK PURISTS AS HATING THE MOST!!!...:) IEEEEAAHH!! aldri7 Edited by aldri7 - April 24 2014 at 14:43 |

I think, personally, the most instantaneous confrontation of prog at the start of a song lies in The Gates of Delirium by Yes. Just close your eyes and you'll enter a different world, most likely run by Roger Dean.

So if Carl Palmer produced an album by Peters and Lee, they would qualify as prog then? |
