The last year or so I've pretty much concentrated on Chamber Prog and Rio/Avant-Jazz artists. I'm really enjoying the break from the usual electric guitar, electric bass, drums and wall of synth format.

 6 pages later and I still don't have a clear idea what 'Chamber prog' is.
Will someone please name 2 or 3 definitive bands in this genre
 
Confused.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Strictly imho a few archetypal Chamber Prog artists:
 
1.) Penguin Cafe Orchestra
 
 
2.) iamthemorning
 
 
3.) North Sea Radio Orchestra
 
 
4.) Panzerpappa

No noone can, that why we can continue to comment and debate on styles.
Havent you noticed, its just picking a few songs you like, and then ask, could those be :
 
Prog - Acid Jazz
Prog - Hardcore Punk
Prog - Singer songwriter
 
ect ect.
 
Will almost allways be some sort of prog elements in there somewhere, as we allready have so many prog sub genres going. Everything is prog in the mind of someone.
Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

The quality I'm enjoying the most in the Chamber Prog sub-genre is what I like to call the Low Key Bombast. By that I mean this: Powerful Music but done in a subtle, nuanced, structured, melodic, traditional yet progressive style.......as opposed to High Key Bombast (the last few King Crimson albums, the last few Porcupine Tree albums, Progressive Metal, etcetera).
 
Also, I forgot to list Prog Folk as being a good source of finding Chamber Prog artists.

I enjoy looking for new bands and styles .
Penguin is listed here as eclectic and North Sea as prog folk.....but I can see with North Sea how the 'chamber' adjective could fit.

Love the chamber sounds on Iamthemorning's debut and I've been looking for more albums like it, so definitely gonna check these out! Never heard of "The Penguin Cafe Orchestra" before though Tongue

^Thanks to your reference I was just lucky enough to find a music of Aranis - Le Feu (from Made In Belgium-2012) - and am quite curious about which would be their musical influences, because personally I found in this interesting track some of Piazzolla's chamber tango resemblance at some moments. Very interesting discovery to dig into, thanks Raff!

You are very welcomeSmile! I was so lucky as to see Aranis open the final edition of NEARfest, two years ago. They were fantastic, and easily one of the best performances of the festival. As to Piazzolla, he was definitely one of the biggest influences on the band, and - if my memory serves me right- they have recorded some of his compositions.

But that would end the discussion after Gryphon and maybe one or two more examples. And no one will STILL listen to any ECM and their design IS CHAMBER MUSIC, and has been for 50 years with almost all of their earlier folks. Can't speak about it for today as much. They were all put into a "white room" and recorded!
 
Many folks here do not listen to chamber music, or what would normally be called "unplugged" enough to be able to appreciate music for the music that it is. So, when they here David Darling and Terje Rypdal, in what would be a massive "chamber music concert", they can't deal with it, because it does not have the "known" beat, and the better known format for the piece!
 
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
