The FA Cup beckons though.......

Yes agreed, but despite the personnel involved, every season since 2005 Arsene Wenger has been spouting the same rhetoric e.g. this squad is growing together and are learning from their past mistakes, I have great belief in this group, Financial Fair Play will endorse our methodology, it's how we respond to disappointments that matters etc. Don't get me wrong, qualifying for the Champions League 14 seasons in a row takes some doing and the board and investors are delighted but sometimes in life you have to BREAK things before they get fixed i.e. do Arsenal have to finish outside the top four in the EPL before measures are taken to push them onto the next level (winning silverware and accepting that there is no moral high ground when it comes to how you play soccer?)
As much as I love Arsene Wenger and all he stands  for, I'm  not convinced he is the man to take the Gunners to the next level. The players clearly adore him but unlike someone like Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho , they don't appear to be just a little scared of him?

Arsene Wenger should be a teacher in some football academy. His teams play beautifully (not 2009-Barca-level beautiful but still). But maybe his skills as a coach leave a little to be desired when it comes to actually winning something. I know he was unlucky that the year he made it to the final of the Champions League he had to face the last year of Rijkaard's Barca which was the seed of the glorious team that came together just 2 years later, but please. When the Henrys, Bergkamps, Pires, Vieiras and all of them retired, Arsenal became that nice person that everybody likes but that none really think will amount to anything in life...

^ Yes, I've long held the view that he should be overseeing youth recruitment and training but the business end of first team management should be handled by a results driven motivator. As to who would fulfill that latter role I'm struggling to think of contenders but off the top of my head:
Gordon Strachan - Steve Bould - Mauricio Pochettino - Roberto Martinez - Jurgen Klopp - Diego Simeone

Simeone has done an incredible job so far and I think he will be one in-demand coach! To take on both Barca and Real Madrid and be ahead of both of them at this stage, given their lack of funds is remarkable.

He was a great player and if ever a team sums up the philosophy of it's coach it's this Athletico team.

Expect all the usual suspects to be after him come the end of the season

I like the way Arsenal play, they are great to watch. They could do with a bully in centre midfield (so could my team!) and a bit of toughness at the back. They would then be very close I think. They have tended to go missing against the very top teams and strengthening in those areas should arrest that problem. Another striker would be useful too. Could RVP return? Possibly, although those rumours seem to have died down now as he seems to be back to his injury prone days......

So, Real Madrid v Bayern and Atletico v Chelsea.

In the final will it be a repeat of 2012 or a Madrid derby?

Obviously I'm going for Bayern (besides my liking for all teams from Germany, specially this one, the fact that the coach is the awesome Pep), but in the cataclysmic scenario where Real Madrid manage to pass through to the final, I'm left with a conundrum. Obviously, I prefer Atletico to Chelsea. But I think Chelsea would be a more difficult rival to Real in the finals. I have no idea.

Please Bayern Munchen win this.

I just noticed, Real Madrid has faced the German trifecta this season. Frist they cruised through Schalke, then they suffered through Dortmund... Now they will meet the big monster and I pray to all the deities that they finally succumb...

Although it was a meaningless game, a full strength Bayern were spanked 3 nil at home by Dortmund yesterdayShocked
so yes, they are human after all and a Real v Chelski isn't so far fetched?

If you read the rabidly biased Gooner hating John Brewin's match report on ESPN you would believe Arsenal barely scraped through against Wigan on penalties owing to a huge amount of luck etc. The stark facts read 27 goal attempts to 8 and 63% possession in the Reds favour. Sometimes Brewin just rips my knitting big style which is a shame because he is otherwise a very fine sports journalist.

and yes, I think Norwich are doomed

Barca lost to one of the worst teams in the league and it's basically out of the running. Yesterday I had a couple of bad hours after following the atrocious game.

So if Atletico needs not to lose on the last game against Barca to become champion and avoid Real Madrid from winning the trophy, I hope my good old Blaugranas play with the reserves.

Such a defeat. A morale crushing defeat. In one week two tournaments lost. And it can get worse on Wednesday in the Copa del rey.

^ True.

It's looking more and more like it's finally gonna be our year. Just four games to go, and the boys are in superb form. Can't really see us losing it now.

You could very well be right. I experienced that funny feeling you sometimes get watching the Liverpool v Man City game where no matter what the visitors were able to do, fate seemed to conspire and had already chosen the eventual winners. City had two cast iron penalty claims not given and did miss the sort of chances they would normally bury but it's hard to argue against the force of nature that is Steven Gerrard and the Reds were rampant 1st half. Kompany was clearly unfit and shouldn't have started while Pellegrini made another odd choice of starting with Navas instead of Milner (the latter's introduction in the second half was instrumental in the visitors managing to draw level at 2-2) The forced withdrawal of Yaya Toure clearly hampered City's chances while the man they all love to hate (Suarez), might have been booked a 2nd time and thus dismissed for simulation (in a tussle with Demichellis) I wouldn't mind Liverpool winning the league as they are a lesser of two much greater evils.Wink

^ A fairly good description of the game, I'd say. Nothing to add.

Come on, Sunderland! Hold on for a few more minutes, please.

Edit: Yes! Thank you!

Nice goal by Bale, completely outpaced the Barca defender who tried to put him in the seats.

For what it's worth I feel your pain The T (I'm just steeling myself for the possible disappointment of Arsenal losing the FA Cup final and also 4th place in the EPL-  though Everton lost today so that's a plus)
