I've never met a person who doesn't admire Gilmour's guitaring . I've met plenty who don't know who Gilmour's is , but those who do, love his style.
Phil Mercy (Thieves' Kitchen) and Chris Fry (Magenta) need mentions..... |

Speak for yourself. As an avid fan of classical, jazz, AND progressive rock, I couldn't help but laugh at your post. This thread was created to post about YOUR FAVORITE guitarist and whether one is being all-inclusive or they're simply sticking to progressive rock or jazz fusion guitarists doesn't mean that these people don't know about other music and the guitarists that play this other music. Leave a list, don't leave a list, that's your prerogative, but don't include anyone else in your post and just worry about your own likes and dislikes. You certainly speak for no one but yourself.

Yes, the original poster asked for our 10 favorite guitarists, not 10 we believed to be the greatest, most influential or most innovative. If that were the case, I would have offered a different set of guitarists. As for the favorites I listed, I could have easily added another 10 and been comfortable with all the choices. But a thing I didn't do was disparage other people's choices, because that would be asinine.

Moshkito likes to throw his toys out of his pram occasionally. His post did make me think though and its interesting that no one has included Carlos Santana in their list.
I also find that there are a lot of guitarists that are part of bands that I simply don't know the names. For instance does anyone know the guitarist in Coheed and Cambria? Superb player but I've not got a clue who he is. At the end of the day its about enjoying music isn't it? and not about being able to post the perfect list showing what a clever or knowledgeable person you are. If it helps I don't make any claims on my behalf for either

I should have but I fired off my post a bit quickly.
I used to listen to CoCa a few years back. He's good but guys like Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) and Adam Jones (TOOL) are better, IMO. |

Bill Nelson is another that's been roundly overlooked. I love Be Bop Deluxe and he is that band pretty much. I think its a bit lazy to trot out the same old names and perhaps we've fallen into that trap all too easily.

^ Bill Nelson would make my top 20, I reckon. Great guitarist.
"Crying to the Sky" is kinda essential listening. Edited by irrelevant - April 09 2014 at 17:00 |

Like with most of my lists, there's a decent mix of old and new. Not really in any particular order, but Fripp might be first if I had to pick just one. Robert Fripp Jon Preston Bouda Piotr Grudzinski Mikael Åkerfeldt Jonas Engdegård Steve Hackett Steve Howe David Gilmour Alex Lifeson John Petrucci |

Ha thank you! I really like his melodic approach to playing, particularly on Second Life Syndrome. He's the shining point on that album I always believed. |
