The Grandmaster

Exquisitely beautiful action/drama about Chinese legend Ip Man who would reestablish the Southern schools of martial arts, in particular Wing Chun, which he went onto teach a young Bruce Lee.   Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon) carries the film with her grace, skill and presence, and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is excellent as the Master.   The best Hong Kong production of 2013 and far superior to the similar Ip Man film from 2008.   An extraordinary movie and highly recommended.

Linsanity

Distended and often dull film documenting Jeremy Lin's long journey through basketball and into the NBA, his family, childhood, and religious perspective.   Linsanity is not all bad and does show Lin's compelling and sympathetic story well but is packed with unnecessary filler, and is no Hoop Dreams.

American Hustle

Largely disappointing caper flick in the vein of Goodfellas but with far less authenticity or detail, fine performances somewhat wasted and a seemingly dismantled storyline.   Christian Bale is very good but the others lack the depth required for the characters and David Russell's direction is sheepish.   A potentially great period movie drops the ball and wastes most of our time.

The Fifth Estate - Benjamin Cumberbatch ( or whatever he is called) - great portrayal of the Wikileaks Mr. Snowden, thoroughly enjoyed.

Killing Kennedy

Mildly entertaining but terribly biased dramatization of Lee Oswald's alleged transformation from Marxist activist to political assassin based on Bill O'Reilly's book, and it's no surprise the movie takes the strict orthodox conservative view that what happened in Dallas is clear: Oswald was a bitter, jealous guy who wanted both political justice and personal glory.   It must be said Rob Lowe is phenomenal as Jack Kennedy and I respect his making the film, but so much of Oswald's life is omitted and so many events chalked-up to circumstance that the premise loses credibility and by the end things become more bizarre sentiment than sincere history.

Flawless

Brutally honest slice-of-life with Robert DeNiro as an ex-cop recovering from a stroke and Philip Seymour Hoffman his drag queen neighbor.   With a great script by director Joel Schumacher, DeNiro is masterful but Hoffman gives the performance of a lifetime as both characters struggle to tolerate the other.   One of the best American movies of the '90s.

^ Some films examine the views/opinions of characters (Flawless), others focus on the behavior/actions and their consequences. At least that's just my perspective.

Out of what I have watched in past month or two this one impressed me the most:

An excellent movie, one of the greatest 21st century American independednt films, and, perhaps, one of the best comedy-dramas I've ever seen, on a par with Friđrik Ţór Friđriksson's 'Angels of the Universe'.
This night wounds time.

^Not really, but I feel like in the end Enid's going to disappear in the nowhere she was going to with that mystery bus. For me it's more an alienation drama about people who are unable to socialize properly.

Can't help but feel I'd have liked Ghost World more if I came across it back in high school or if I had more of a shared cultural frame of reference with the main characters.

Had to watch Frozen last night with the kids.  Awful.  With Disney you expect the usual saccharine songs here and there, but this was song after song after song.  It was like watching a damn musical.  A vastly overrated movie.

The War of the Worlds  (1953)

If you want to see where Spielberg got much of his inspiration for things like Jaws, Close Encounters and E.T., it's in this sci-fi thriller loosely based on the Wells story.   A mix of small town Americana and surprisingly effective action, TWotW moves briskly and wastes no time getting to the plot.   Dated but not dulled, it is a masterpiece of 1950s science fiction.
