Is your Prog Collection too big?

I realised my collection could do with some more additions after I bought my first Galahad album ... some more Galahad albums

Knobber would much rather horseshoe Knobber's own tuckus.

I mainly do digital music, so "size" isn't really a problem for me.  If it's an artist I like, or if I listen to the album and find out I really like it, I usually buy a physical copy...mostly because it's just nice to have that physical copy, and also because I've gotten quite a few of the albums I really like signed at concerts and festivals I've been to.  But it does get hard to keep track of artists as the collection gets bigger and bigger.  That's why I undertook a project to rate all my music on rateyourmusic.com and make lists for each year - that way when I'm trying to figure out what I want to listen to, I often go to my lists and look at what's in the higher ratings for each year.

My ex-girlfriend used to say it's too big. My Prog collection I mean of course.

There are 43,000 albums listed on PA.  Let's say most aren't essential to a collector of the best progressive music. Most compilations aren't essential, most live albums aren't essential, and most bands are inferior to some other bands (which bands those are will vary from person to person, but anyway) So let's say 4,000 albums are essential - that's less than 10% of everything on PA.

I have probably around 900 prog albums so plenty of room for expansion.

Why? Were you wanting to get your hands on some of it??? 

I'm a bit halfway from breaking the CD barrier of 1600.  Throw in surviving vinyl VHS and DVD and I'd bust through.  We are talking prog because it is mostly prop or should be considered prog.

BTW this wasn't an intentional effort.  It just kind of happened to happen...

Nope. Not big enough. I sold a whole bunch of cds years ago but then decided to stop that and rebuild my collection. I'm still rebuilding. I don't even think I've hit 1000 yet. I'll get there soon though. 

Nope mine not nearly big enough-I have a few hundred LPs,a couple pf hundred CDs,expanding daily....Still looking for those elusive gems which are getting harder to find on vinyl.

I'm fairly selective about what I actually buy and besides I own my home and have a dedicated music room to store it all. What bothers me is what will happen to it when I die since my daughters and 2 sons in law don't seem interested in prog .
