What if you had the power to bring them back to life so you could kill them over and over...

I think nobody here - including me - actually know what is eternity. Because so much developing of science was not enough, and wil never be enough, to coherently explain everything. Always there will be another new subatomic "particle" to squeeze it all, giving an example. This Modern Physics sometimes lacks of good sense: nobody dares to say what there was before the Big Bang! It didn't happen by chance, even if it occurred "by chance" something already had to exist to make possible the "spontaneous birth", of course. For me everything in this Universe is a question of eternity - the compression and expansion of it, the polarization, the notion we have of what is united and what is dispersed, life and death, atheist or agnostic, and so on, an eternal question.

There will always be space and time. They will exist forever. Matter and life don't need to be around for that to be. I feel living things, in order to think and sense, and have volition need the structure of the body to do their handiwork. When conciousness ceases, and the body rots, the energy has nothing to hold onto so it disperses into nothingness.
These are some of my feelings and impressions. |

No, unfortunately not. You see, from what I could ascertain in my reading, there was this Jesus fellow (ostensibly the son of god, god in this case Yahweh, who impregnated a mortal, much like Zeus did, but Zeus seemed to prefer turning himself into various animals, like bulls and swans, before using his godhead -- but I digress), anyway, this Jesus fellow made pretty clear that murder and killing were right out, and that one must not judge others (he was pretty clear that that was god's sole province -- and he being son of god, would know what dad liked).
So, it seems to me if you go in for this sort of belief, given the preferences of Jesus (and by extension, his dad), most Crusaders and Inquisitors are probably in Hell (Hell being the place of the naughty, where one goes having pissed off God sufficiently that one doesn't end up in Purgatory -- Purgatory, God's Waiting Room, being a medieval Catholic construct made famous by Dante Alghieri, an Italian Catholic poet no one reads anymore, like John Milton, an English protestant poet no one reads anymore).
And there you have it. You can smoke and drink, but disemboweling Muslims and burning Anabaptists at the stake would not be welcome in the celestial saloons of heaven.

I'm sure the Christian God will reward your good behavior on earth with the ability to wreak your imaginary havoc and live out your wildest fantasies while in his heavenly kingdom. |

I understand what you mean Doug, in fact The Physics theories tell the same about space and time, but the physicists are now realizing that space & time, matter & energy are much more interlaced in the subatomic universe, up to the point that all that concepts we have are totally relative. That's a whole new world they are just begining to dig into. Edited by Rick Robson - February 06 2014 at 06:20 |

I wonder if the exception in relativity is the concept of eternity. For me it has to be absolut in order to exist. |

As for the concept of eternity , yeah, i see what you are getting at. It either is an absolute, or it isn't. And it must be for it to be what it is. Edited by presdoug - February 06 2014 at 07:30 |

While I'm not religious I have to say I fully respect those whom religion has given peace and harmony in their lives. I have cases very very close to me of people that were stressed and that had chaos in their lives and a new found belief (not in priests or anything but in something spiritual) has given them newer perspectives that seem to have changed (or at least improved) their lives. What is it to gain by being the ultra smart who insists on trying to convince them that their beliefs might possibly be wrong?

That would depend on the specific beliefs I suppose. |

Both of you should really try to get a better understanding of physics. I mean that in a completely non-quarrelsome way. |

It's OK man, but I'm not really interested about what Physics has to tell about space and time, because it doesn't treat them in the phylosphical way. As far as I'm concerned, it uses them as separate "entities" in order to formulate their theories. I'm only questioning the concept we have of space and time (including the concept of eternity). |

If we are alive until there... but as you said it's a very delicate question still overlooked by the human selfishness. It seems their only concern is the "particles acceleration"... |

You shouldn't talk about matter, space, time, and energy when it's pretty evident that you don't know what they are. |
