H'm Not getting my turntable out - the Mrs wouldn't allow it anyway - Turntables come into the category of "Clutter" - And she has been pushing for a modern minimalist environment for ages - She will realise that I am possibly clutter also and push me under the No 22 Bus

You're very self controlled to resist previewing on the web, Barney
![]() I've now managed to hear all the 5 tracks courtesy of people who've posted them (well, not exactly true, I'm currently half way through the title track). Black As The Sky was an immediate hit with me, Kaleidoscope sounds pretty good, Into The Blue is probably a grower, not sure about Beyond The Sun yet. The album strikes me as more akin to the first two albums than to the Whirlwind. Portnoy is certainly on form on this one. There's quite a lot of doublebass drumming.

Well, tonight I spun the first CoE CD, not as good as their second it would seem from the inaugural listening - but the Epic is surely going to grow on me! Then I spun Edison's children - In the last....h'm wasn't in the mood for that after ten mins - so I decided that I would save that for a chill-out mood. So I put on - (no I didn't fecking play Snow Patrol...because I HAVEN'T GOT ANY OF THAT INDY RUBBISH IN MY HOUSE!!!

Got Kaleidoscope Yesterday. Sounds OK on the first couple listens. It's basically Momentum + Desolation Rose. I'm not really a fan of what Roine's been doing recently, especially this heaviness that he brings, and of course Neal's input is nothing different.
The first epic is alright; i'm not really a fan of Daniel's singing but he absolutely nailed it in Into the Blue. Shine and Beyond the Sun aren't terribly special. The latter is just a Neal Morse ballad, but nothing really memorable like the ones from the first two albums. Black As the Sky is good. Sounds a bit like Snow in some parts. The chorus is kind of weak, but the middle instrumental section is killer. The title track is definitely the best though. Roine and Pete have cool parts in the middle. The last 8 minutes or so is an instrumental section that screams early Flower Kings, so that's cool. Come to think of it, the album definitely has the most TFK sound out of all Transatlantic albums. Not bad, but i'm afraid these guys are gradually running out of ideas. I kind of expected it though. Desolation Rose wasn't terribly special. I think this will grow on me a bit though. Also, if anyone gets the vinyl version of this, can you tell me what the dynamic range is like? I have the first three albums on vinyl and they sound much better than the CD counterparts.

That's pretty much my impression, Mr Mustard, despite having only heard the songs on Youtube (my CD should arrive in a week or so). I count myself lucky to have heard the title track as it was only online for a few hours. The person who uploaded it combined it with an ad for one of these "get rich quick" schemes and as a result his account was closed!! It's interesting that several of the online reviews say that "Into The Blue" is the best of the two epics, but both you and I seem to prefer Kaleidoscope.
I'm also in agreement with Barney about All Of The Above. They have never bettered that song IMO.

Into The Blue was the better of the two to my ears, on my first 3-4 listens. The section with Daniel's vocals in particular is brilliant.
Kaleidoscope disappointed me at first but it is growing on me. I'm still not convinced there's enough melody there but we'll see. Edited by TrickedTail - January 25 2014 at 06:25 |

I think Desolation Rose blows Kaleidoscope away. It's much more concise, edited and focused in vision. This new TA is just horrible. Yes, Daniel's singing is good and the synth solos here and there are okay, but let's face it, the Morse formula is getting way overdone. If they would've used the best parts of each song on the album then they could've had a tight 20-30 minute epic. It all just seems so uninspired. I really feel for all of them. They have all these projects that require so much music, there's no way to keep it fresh. Musicians have their own sound and really can't get too far away from it. Within two months Roine did a TFK and a TA album...this after almost two decades of almost 2 albums a year.
I'm gaining more and more respect for Steven Wilson. He had a vision and sound that he worked with and when he was done with it, he changed directions. His albums, these days, are focused, not overlong and, well, produced so much better than any prog over the last 15 years. RE: SoNE, i like everything on that album except the epic. One More Time is classic and has a great arrangement. Bringing back that killer intro kills me.

Well I will try to give Kaleidoscope an equitable listen, without prejudice. It must be hard, for the likes of Stolt - who has now written so much music, what can he do that's new and fresh. Mind you if you are looking for something different don't listen to the new release by TA - listen to Snow Patrol (or whatever!) instead - that seems to be the solution to this predicament!!

I have an alternate solution - I look at my prog collections and select a CD that I've bought and archived, I may have listened to the CD once or maybe not at - all - I probably have a couple of hundred CD's that I have spun once....oh the mystery!!! - and I don't have to go down the path of indy depravity to get my sordid kicks !!!

another thing that i'm tired of is Roine's constant use of minor blues as a goto section for an epic. they do it all over the place on Kaleidoscope. it's just so boring and uninteresting when he relies on the wah wah. maybe mix it up a bit with some auto-wah :-)

Some of you guys are obviously completely burnt-out on all things TFK, Morse, TA, etc, etc. Instead of continuously sniping at them, why not just accept that you have fallen out of love with them, enjoy what you used to love about them, and move on? We are all passionate about music here and falling out of love with a band is extremely similar to falling out of love with a partner. You can either decide to stick with them and grow increasingly bitter and sarcastic, or accept that you've both changed and move on. Just saying........... |

Good point, Nov.
A handful of listens into Kaleidoscope, I think it is pretty great. There are great melodies all over the place in both epics, Black as the Sky is a killer rocking tune, and the two shorter ballads are both nice. This is gonna be in my CD player A LOT in 2014.

Well I've certainly not fallen out of love with TFK, easily my favourite band. I just commented that whilst the last 2 releases are very good they are not as good as the classic period, that's all. Not got the new TA yet, but the one song I have heard (Black As The Sky) is a killer! Amazon advise me it's on the way, 'bout time.
I don't own anything by Snow Patrol and would be more than likely listening to electronic music at the moment as well as some prog! I doubt if Klaus Schulze and Boards of Canada would go down too well in Ibiza, perhaps at Cafe del Mar but that's about it. Edited by Roj - January 27 2014 at 03:47 |

I did see Snow Patrol live though (and they were excellent).
It's called a varied taste in music. I like prog, I like trance/techno, I like metal, I like electronic, I like some indie, I like classic rock, I like dance, I like some classical, I like psych/space rock, I like ambient, I even like some drum n bass. I just like prog and electronic most. |

My love for the Flower Kings has not diminished. Though I've found the last two albums disappointing, I still find them enjoyable. Just not near the level of their best work. They are still my favorite band though. Morse is a different story. Even my favorite albums by him are unquestionably formulaic.......I just happen to love the formula. However, I'm finding that I am getting burnt out on that formula. I've never been a huge fan of TA, the first album is still my favorite and their best effort by a mile. Once again though, still find the other albums enjoyable, just not as good as TFK's or even some of Morse's solo stuff (or his Beard albums, for that matter). I'm getting the new TA, in the next week or so, but I'm just going with the single CD version. The covers on the last album seemed entirely pointless and uninspired, so I didn't want to bother this time (though the originals were pretty good, so I don't really regret getting the bonus CD for that one). I've never cared for "making of" DVD's either, so that's not something I ever cared about. Anyway, I still enjoy symphonic prog, I'm just getting a bit tired of the repetition that many symph bands seem to get stuck in. I never thought of it as a limited genre, since classical music has such a broad palette and is it's main influence along with rock. It seems though, that bands focused on this sound tend to fall into the same cliché's fairly regularly. Again, this isn't always a problem for me. I just think these guys always create high expectations, so it's not surprising that I get disappointed when they don't meet them. Doesn't mean I don't still enjoy the music though......... |

Yeah, the epic on TSoNE took me the longest to get into, I think because it isn't really structured like a "typical" epic. I think my least favorite track is the instrumental, as it just seems like a very basic framework for Zoltan to go nuts over. His playing on it is fantastic, but the actual music seems incidental and not very interesting. |

It seems to me that a lot of people are getting a little bit "touchy" about the progressive eye of Sauron sweeping across the desolate music-scape as they try to hide behind the shadow cast by whatever non-progressive music (their guilty pleasure) they are currently grooving to. Nobody expects the PROGRESSIVE INQUISITION........
