^ As You know - I don't really listen to anything other than Symphonic/Neo prog and progressive metal....Plenty to go at yet I reckon - And surely the epic of all epics is just around the corner, close to the edge and down by a river....
Maybe even a spruced up and lengthened version of "Close" - The Jordan Rudess version of Tarkus (Steve Wilson vocals) is far better than the original in my opinion... |

i need to check out that version of Tarkus! Well, listening to the new TA has just catapulted me straight to some harder/crossover stuff. I see a PT/Riverside binge in my near future. i ever got any of the PT remasters and haven't heard much Riverside. I might add some Opeth in there for good measure. |

Roj, We've talked about this on Facebook, but I'm really in the same boat. I bop on here daily to keep touch with all of you guys, but I don't know why, Prog just hasn't really done it for me as of late.
I listened to the new Flower Kings and it's pretty good, the new Spock's Beard is really good and The Raven is fantastic, but I've been listening to more and more Indy and or blues. I don't see myself getting the new Transatlantic, I enjoy the new Dream Theater but I keep listening to other stuff. I will say this much, Snow Patrol does have a seventeen minute song . . . |

What I will say is I heard Black As The Sky from the new TA album this morning, it's on the latest prog mag sampler and I'm impressed, it's a great song. Nice vocals from almost all the band at one point or another (!) and awesome drumming from Portnoy. Plus Rob, you'll love this - synths a plenty, it will definitely get a thumbs up from you I reckon.
Tom, I actually saw Snow Patrol live a few years back. It was just after they'd hit the big time but they played all their edgier heavier earlier stuff which shocked most of the crowd who had come expecting Chasing Cars pretty much on loop for the full show, much to my amusement. |

I've read over half a dozen online reviews of Kaleidoscope in the last few days (I have Transatlantic on "like" on Facebook

Well I am expecting to be preached at by Morse
![]() It seems that a few people are becoming overloaded with the number of releases that seem to be rushed-out. I think that a band such as TA should take their time - compiling good ideas over a long period of time - and then put out a much better product - rather than jam in a studio and rush to get it out there. I know that TA being a band of musicians that have other commitments - may have a problem with this though... Edited by M27Barney - January 23 2014 at 05:04 |

Well, I played Monsters & Men very loudly last night just to reassure myself that I was right and you were wrong and........I was right!! ![]() Shivers up the spine literally the whole way through and every note of it is perfect to my ears. I would actually say that it is now elevated to being a top three Flower Kings track. Isn't it amazing that we can both love this band but have polar opposite views on one of their best tracks ![]() ![]() |

I second this, If I was to play a FK's track right now - it would have to be Stardust, I am the sun, Garden or Monsters - so those are the top four as far as I'm concerned ! |

Now if they'd plopped that synth solo form blackest sky into the intro or middle of an epic, they'd have something. that synth solo is one of two good moments on the album, imo. @Roland, i'm with you. i like to come by and keep up with this thread, but i really haven't been too excited about prog lately. my attempts at getting back into PT may be prove to be pointless as well. i've been listening to geek podcasts and pat methany....who i'm seeing in a few weeks! ![]() |

This may be the issue for me as well, though I still enjoy listening to a fair amount of prog. I think it might be a sympho/neo burn out perhaps, as I still enjoy the wilder, edgier, and somewhat more experimental prog stuff that I have. I have a strong suspicion that I will react similarly to the new TA. |

Well, I put that track on as well, thinking I might be wrong. My attention wandered after a couple minutes and I had difficulty focusing my attention on it for more than a half minute at a time, as nothing grabbed my attention let alone caused "shivers" (which has been the case since I first heard it in 2006). So I was right and you were wrong, it turns out ![]() ![]() Edited by infandous - January 23 2014 at 10:53 |

You know, remove the last track listed here, and I agree with you 100%. I have listened to some tracks from Stardust, Flower Power, Space Revolver, and even Rainmaker recently, and in every case they just sounded so much better than anything from the two latest albums (and far, far better than Monsters and Men ![]() |

Yeah, I agree with almost all of this. TSoNE, for whatever reason, has really worked for me since re-listening to it a year or so ago when I was trying to understand why Banks did nothing for me. Like I said, TSoNE just seems to have everything I love about TFK's and prog in general, and nothing I don't. I can't say the same for the last two FK albums. As you say, symphonic and neo prog in general have gotten far too formulaic for me I think. That didn't used to be an issue for me, as I thought I'd never get enough of the symphonic prog approach. I guess I was wrong, and I seem to have reached saturation point. Time to start branching out more, I guess. Though I agree that the older stuff still sounds great to me. |

I just had a look on Youtube in case someone had uploaded any tracks from Kaleidoscope and I found a few. They will most likely be removed soon as I'm sure the band haven't approved them, so anyone who's interested - be quick.
You can find Beyond The Sun, Black As The Sky, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Indiscipline, plus And You And I (but that's already been put on Soundcloud officially). I have to say that Black As The Sky seriously rocks - I love it. But can anyone tell me where I've heard to rhyhmic bit immediately before the vocals come in? I think it might be from a Neal Morse song. Beyond The Sun is quite nice, but I think it will need to grow on me. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a good cover, but Iniscipline I only got through the first minute - not to my taste.

I suppose that we shall all be in a position to rate the TA shortly! I can't bring myself to sneak preview on the web - I like the tradition (when you got the new vinyl in it's gate-fold sleeve) of looking at the CD, the artwork - and gloating over it -then you give it a spin...and you hope that it's a winner and not a waste of money...
