I didn't do a progressive metal one because its difficult probably Steve Harris Danny Carey plus the guitarist and singer from Riverside and Keven Moore on keys probably short of a guitarist though

Here's an all-modern one: Mattias Olsson - Drums Daniel Gildenlow - Vocals and backing guitar (if needed) Piotr Grudzinsky - Guitar Mathew Kennedy - Bass Neal Morse - Keys and backing vocals (if needed) I could easily shuffle the respective groups each of these musicians are best associated with, plus or minus one, and come up with any range of epic combinations. Well I know you would take Orford in a heart beat. ![]() Gunter Werno. Keyboardist for Vanden Plas. He is brilliant. Listen to either Christ 0 or Seraphic Clockwork. Amazing arrangements, but Richard I'm not sure actually how you really feel about Prog Metal in general. I know you dig Maiden, so maybe Vanden Plas could work for you. ;) |

I used to like Dream Theater but gradually got bored to the point where I only listen to Images and Words and Awake very occasionally. Beyond that I like a bit of Threshold and also I'm just beginning to listen to Riverside (SONGS and Rapid Eye Movement) so my next Prog metal purchases will be Riverside most highly rated albums. Thanks for the recommendation though. I will check them out.

Extreme metal lineup: Chuck Shuldiner--Guitar Joe Duplantier--Guitar + Vocals Tomas Haake--Drums Dominic 'Forest' Lapoint--Fretless bass I'd say Chuck and Joe would both primarily be rhythm (Chuck as 'lead' rhythm) with Forest's fretless providing the only thing close to melody sometimes.

For sure my friend. Anytime. I will say the bands you listed here are quite good. Riverside's Secondlife syndrome and Anno Domini are quality albums while Threshold's Critical Mass is still my favourite output them. I also must say I'm sorry that DT are boring you, but I think adding 6 degrees Of Inner Turbulence beside I&W's and Awake wouldn't hurt you at all. I really feel that 6 Degrees is actually one of thee strongest/most creative Prog metal albums ever assembled. If by chance you have not heard it I doubt that album would disappoint you. And enjoy Vanden Plas!! Christ O was easily the best concept album of 2006. It's amazing. |

I actually gave Six degrees 5 stars when I reviewed and was my favourite DT album for a long time. The second disc works best for me with Jordan Rudess taking control. I've seen DT play live but that was about 10 years ago. Think I've just moved on and they just don't float my boat anymore.

Well, at least their are 3 DT albums that sit well with you and you have something to appreciate and fall back on with in DT's discography. Also. Don't forget about Vanden Plas. Just listen to Christ 0 first and if you end up liking the album we can certainly talk more about them if you like. :) |

Super-dissonant grunge metal or something:
Billy Corgan--Vocals (Smashing Pumpkins) Omar Rodriguez-Lopez--Guitar (At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta/Bosnian Rainbows) Adam Jones--Guitar (Tool) Colin Marston--Bass (preferably with his Gorguts tone) (Behold... the Arctopus/Dysrhythmia/Gorguts) Michel Langevin--Drums (Voivod) Devin Townsend--Programming + production (DTB/DTP/SYL) |

After listening to some Haken, I have been thinking that Ross Jennings would sound great singing with Dream Theater. I always thought DT had some of the strongest musicians available, and wouldn't change anyone (specially before Portnoy left), except for LaBrie, and replacing him with Jennings would just complete the perfect line-up. Of course, by now I guess it's just better to have more Haken.
