People often forget how weird and off-kilter Blue Öyster Cult's early LPs could be, to the point their reputation as the United States' answer to Black Sabbath or Deep Purple isn't accurate at all. It's the kind of dark adventurous rock music that's difficult to pigeonhole into any specific subgenre and even more difficult to replicate today. |

By far the BÖC album closest to the rest of 1970s hard rock/heavy metal, but still has a lot of the unique darkly surrealistic touches that placed them apart from that pack. Really shows how big a difference having some kind of unifying "band concept" can make, even when said concept is as incomprehensible as the entire bizarro sci-fi mythology Sandy Pearlman cooked up for the 'Cult. |

My favorite of the first few BOC albums, btw, is the one you'll probably play next - Secret Treaties. |

GINO VANNELLI - "Brother to Brother" (1978) Shamelessly balls-out soul pop, bombastic to the max and proud of it, and the best studio musicians money can buy. Edited by HolyMoly - January 21 2014 at 08:29 |

FLASH AND THE PAN - "Early Morning Wake Up Call" (1984) Late 70s/Early 80s art pop/ new wave by ex-Easybeats George Young and Harry Vanda (also known as the producers of the first few AC/DC albums, as G. Young is Angus and Malcolm's older brother). This is their 4th album, not quite as inspired as their first 2 albums, but still pretty solid. Edited by HolyMoly - January 21 2014 at 09:12 |

THE BEVIS FROND - "Hit Squad" (2004) Veteran underground psychedelic rocker Nick Saloman's long-running project. Song-based with the occasional extended freakout. For a guy with this many albums with this many songs, he's remarkably consistent. I think Andy Ward (ex Camel) is his drummer, and Adrian Shaw (ex Hawkwind) is his bassist, or at least they used to be for a while. Edited by HolyMoly - January 21 2014 at 10:04 |

GHOST - "Tune in, Turn on, Free Tibet" (1999) Japanese psychedelic folk band, really lovely. This is one of their better albums and it has 7 short tunes followed by a 31 minute improvisational piece that turns up the amps considerably. Edited by HolyMoly - January 21 2014 at 11:17 |
