Just having my first listen and its just 'okay'. At times its annoyingly too much like other bands. For instance track 9 'Somebody' is so much like Anathema its ridiculous.. but then I do like Anathema

Always interesting, I've bought around 50 prog albums this year that I'd consider at least good and we only have one in common, Steve Wilson. Got to love the variety & volume of releases at the moment.

1. The Raven That Refused To Sing - Steven Wilson 2. The Legend Of The Holy Circle - The Three Monks 3. Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep - Spocks Beard 4. Ravens and Lullabies - Oliver Wakeman and Gordon Giltrap 5. Lifesigns - Lifesigns 6. Shrine Of The New Generation Slaves 7. Dimensionaut - Sound Of Contact 8. Les Revenants - Mogwai 9. Fright pig - Fright Pig 10. Desolation Rose - The Flower Kings 11. Finnegans Wake - Tangerine Dream the one in bold was the late contender for my favourite album of the year. There needs to be more prog with pipe organ ![]() but Mr Wilson's mix of contemporary and retro ideas all beautifully tied up with a neat little bow gets my top vote ![]() |

Wow!!! Richard and King Manuel!! Nice to see the Demensionaut album rank so high on your lists!
It really was a nice surprise debut album from Phil's son. ;) I'm afraid it won't crack my 10, but I still think its a solid album nonetheless. ;) |

^ Nice debut album as you say. I think I have 3 in my list (Lifesigns and Fright Pig being the others) all good imo.
I would only give my top 3 albums 5 stars btw. I don't think this year has been as good as last year.

^. 2012 was very good. TOWER OF SILENCE BY ANUBIS knocked me out! So beautiful, but 2013 has been goosebump city for me like crazy....so many titles from so many of my all time favourite bands. :)

^ Anathema - Weather Systems was the last album that had that impact on me.
the most beautiful music I've heard in recent years is from a lady called Natasha Khan , a British born Pakistani who makes music that would even make Kate Bush envious. She goes under the name Bat For Lashes (not sure why). Also a band that I rate very highly is Wolf People. Their latest album (Frain) would be in my top five for 2013 if they were a prog band. Just imagine Paul Weller but with better songs and better musicians and you get the picture. Progwise, 2013 has been a bit of a let down for me apart from the obligatory Steven Wilson masterpeice , pipe organ magic from Three Monks and a new album from the always reliable Spocks Beards. A lot of 3-4 star releases perhaps but nothing amazing and even the albums I love are not exactly pushing back any boundaries or adding anything particular new to the scene. |

The two I posed on page one retain their spots high on my list...Combat Astronomy (Kundalini Apocalypse) and Rhun (FDC)...additional ones that resonated with me:
Ulver - Messe I.X-VI.X Spaltklang - In Between Unit Wail - Retort Ukandanz - Yetcheal The Tangent - Le Sacre... Archestra - Arches October Equus - Permafrost Caillou - S/t Jaga Jazzist - Live With BS Psicomagia - S/t The Worm Ouroboros - Of Things... Homunculous Res - Limiti... FZ - Road Tapes Vol 2 Grand General - S/t Athanor - Vos Cites Sont... Biggest disappointments: Spock's Beard, Riverside, Fromuz. As always I'll go through the top list on PA before making a final decision. Overall pretty good year I though. Not the best, certainly not the worst. And S Wilson's The Raven...is his first one that may make it on my list. |

I bought this recently, and was surprised to find these guys not on the Archives (from what I can tell?). There is an American band with the same name, but pretty sure they're a totallly different group altogether? Unless they are on the Archives, I wonder if anyone has proposed them on the `suggest new artists' thread? I'm going to give it my first spin on the way to work today! ![]() |

They are indeed different! This one is from Belarus and I would imagine the only reason they aren't on the site is the album came out in September I think, and I believe it's their first. I do agree they belong here.
(The American one [which doesn't have the 'the' at the front] is a black metal influence post-y shoegaze affair that falls a but flat to my ears.) |

Thanks Mr Hat! I noticed on your lists here and the other thread that you've also rated highly both the new Unit Wail and the Miss Clara one - another two albums I've bought but haven't listened to yet!
I'm also liking Dialeto's `The Lost Tribe', really good, got a review ready to go for that one. Great to see some love for OE's `Permafrost', got that one in the car right now too...though listening at night is much more appropriate! ![]() |

Np! Unit Wail is the real deal IMO. A step up from their excellent debut CD as well.
Was Dialeto's from this year as well? I did enjoy that one. Very intriguing mix of sounds...a perfect fit for the Moonjune label. Can't wait to hear October Equus' other new one for 2013 (under The OE Quartet). |

I'm a fan of all of these, I agree with your assessment that Unit Wail's release is even stronger than their excellent debut. One of the highlights of the year was seeing them in Paris at Soleil Zeuhl. |
