Canterbury hasn't been the same since Henry VIII stripped and destroyed Becket's shrine. It used to be such a nice place.

I have visited both, and Canterbury is by far my favourite of the two. York Minster is impressive, but I found the interior way too brightly lit - which, in my opinion, ruins the atmosphere of a Gothic cathedral.

Canterbury is the best - spent a lot of time there when I was young and still do now that my son is at Uni down there.

I also visited both pagan temple sites (yes, as an atheist, I can admit to that), but have been man more times in Kent (10 times at least, but 4 times on my way to London) than in Yorkshire (thrice, but twice on my way to Edimburgh)... I'd tend to agree that I also prefer Canterbury's, but more for musical reasons (are there any prog groups from York??? ) as for the cities themselves, I tend to prefer York, though, with its awesome shambles.

At last a thread where I can make some sense. Worked on both of these fine buildings, of the two Canterbury is easily my favourite. Have been to nearly every cathedral in England & Wales now, having been involved in heritage projects for a number of them, and only missing a few roman catholic ones. I have to say that Lincoln Cathedral is easily my favourite in the land.
