All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Depends on my mood really. Suffice to say that I love everything up to, and including, The Wall - with Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Animals being equally orgasmic. Today though, and all of last month, I'd say More. I think I rated it 4 stars back when i first began to write reviews, but that doesn't mean anything to me really. I love that album, even if I think AHM is a 'better' album......yeah I'm confusing myself a bit here, but 'best' is such a ludicrous connotation applied to music. So I vote for my fave - and for a long time it's been More. |
Mine too, my friend, such a shimmering hazy rough diamond.
I've still got a mad tie-dye'd `More' t-shirt, but sadly it hasn't fit in years, I had it when I was a teenager. |
I had one with La Vallé on it and no it doesn't fit anymore - hell it doesn't even exist. I wore it to pieces, and being my go-to shirt for attending bonfire parties, it never really had a chance...

Not voting coz I love too many of their albums - but the 'More Soundtrack' is special. Love Wright's Farfisa organ - man, 69-71 was just earth-shattering Floyd (of course, the remaining guys these days have 'grown up' and disown their stoned ramblings......)

Oh don't go there Tom. He's the doctor you know. He makes a living out of infuriating fans of (insert highly thought of album), and then sit back and watch the mayhem unfold. Definitely not worth the effort, if you ask me

Tom, I've simply learned on here that there's numerous fans who cannot stand psychedelic music, that's it's too `weird', `stupid', `idiotic' etc, and instantly dismiss it as garbage.
I've seen this directed at Floyd, Caravan, Eloy, Gong, and a whole ton of Kraut stuff plenty of times.
I think they need a little colour in their life lol!

Y'know, there's this naivety and profound joy in psychedelic music, both for the creators and the listeners. A real sense of discovery and surrealism all in a colourful package. Brainticket got it right, especially with 'Psychonaut'.

I never thought for one second I would agree with an Australian (except for their and my shared loathing of Fosters lager) but I too think Piper is utter rubbish. That may be the only thing I and Dr Prog ever agree on.

It's nice to see some appreciation of the marvellous More album . I've always wondered why this wasn't more popular. My personal highlights from More are the shimmering and edgy psychedelic ambience of Quicksilver, the amost indescribable and heavenly Cirrus Minor and the truly stunning Cymbaline. This would be very very close to my favourite Floyd album and always has been. I'd say Animals still takes the vote but More is definitely in my top 3. Oh and to dismiss Piper as rubbish, well it may be a bit weird and not to everyone's taste but that is a groundbreaking album and worthy of great respect. Whilst I am not the biggest fan of KC's debut, there are gems on there and it's influence on the development of prog rock was vast. I personally would not dismiss albums in such a way. Each to their own eh? And Fosters isn't that bad for a thirst quencher imho .

These "best of" polls are getting painful! So much awesome music to weed out.
Wish You Were Here, with Dark Side of the Moon just a hair behind.

Meddle together with Wish You Were Here. But as WYWH wins anyway I vote for Meddle. I didn't love it years ago too much but during the time I liked it more and more and today I appreciate it probably the most of Pink Floyd records.
