I have Blackfeather's At The Mountain Of Madness, an interesting work that reminds me most of Captain Beyond and/or some Deep Purple Mk 1 stuff ... boasts a real talent in guitarist/composer John Robinson ...

Also heard about, but never actually listened to Sebastian Hardie and Windchase (two linked bands I believe). I rarely see Aussie prog discussed and have wondered what the land that gave us AC/DC, Midnight Oil and Men At Work has to offer in the prog department?

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

the only aussie prog  band I know well is The Church ...

Critics have hailed them  as "Best guitar band on earth", "Sonic perfection", "Sounds that caress the senses".

if I was to  categorise them  I guess I'd say they were  psychedelic  -  with an electric  edge of late.   Steve Kilbey's solo stuff is pretty good too ...

They have changed a lot over the years - from the early 80's to current - they have a bit more of a harder edge now - long jams and solos - but also soft acoustic stuff too. They are definitely worth checking out!

An interesting new Aussie band is Architecture in Helsinki ... not strictly prog but full of unusual time signature changes, a medley of instruments  and an innovative , fresh feel !

I've heard some good things about Gandalf, although I've also heard that he's more new age than prog.  He's listed on here, so I'm mentioning him.

Austria and Australia are two different countries, man.

Gandalf is from Austria, "aussie", I believe, is the slang for a person who comes from Australia.

Arcitectiure in Helsinki are wonderful. By most of the definitions on here the latest album is progressive but with tracks of a pop length. What The Flower kings take 30 mins to do AIH take 3mins!

The Church are a good band but really belong in the Alternative scene. Close relatives to Echo and the Bunnnymen, a bit like Earlier PT but with shorter pieces like later PT.

Sebastien Hardie supported Yes in 2003. Very good obviously influenced by Focus and the great Yes themselves. However lead singer Mario Millo has his own Mario Millo band which are worth checking out.

Sydney band Cog are prog in the Tool end of the prog spectrum and are making a splash in the local scene.

An Australian band called Kahvas Jute produced probably one of the bests examples of progressive hard rock in about 1971. The album is called Wide Open and it has been reissued on CD. The record is obviously a big collectors item and very rare. Dennis Wilson was the main driving force behind the band and is a very good guitarist.

Icehouse?

Check out the fusion band Indaba (a studio and live album available) for a nice Australian take on the genre.  Chad Wackerman's Australian band - what happened to them, after his third solo album release? And the Aussies who have moved to California:

Uncle Moes Space Ranch Windows Media Music Downloads, DVD and video.

for instance Brett Garsed, T.J. Helmrich of UMSR

Planet X - Universe CD album cover

Virgil Donatti................

Men At Work.......................... whoops......................

You said it ... and here's an explanation I cooked up earlier ....

First off, my avatar is a genuine picture of a "goal" that was scored by Tottenham Hotspur (the team that The Bullet and I both support) against Manchester United (a team that I loathe). However the linesman was too far behind the play and the keeper scooped it out before he arrived and it was not given as a goal.

As a long time Tottenham fan surrounded by Manchester United fans (including my father, most of my friends and relatives ... in fact, Malaysia has the largest number of MU fans outside the UK) I was particularly outraged since I have long mantained that Manchester United gain a distinct advantage when playing at their home ground (in league matches from 1993 to 2003 penalties were awarded at a rate of 17 in favour of Manchester United and 1 in favour of whichever opposition they happened to be playing!

At the time of the incident I had already been quite annoyed by a match a few weeks earlier when Arsenal (Spurs' historical arch-rivals) lost to Manchester United in a match filled with dubious refreeing decisions and had a record-breaking 49 game unbeaten run snapped. It takes some doing to annoy a Spurs fan over an injustice to Arsenal, but I've always preferred to see my team lose in a fair game, rather than win deceitfully. (can someone get me an emoticon with a halo?)

Tony R, as a die-hard MU fan has accordingly found a misleading picture (which I just realised he admitted to having manipulated)  The MU fans in my office behave in a similar manner ... and continually delete this evidence of blatant injustice which I have set as my background on my work terminal... so I thought I'd get my own back my using it as my avatar. It's all in good fun of course, between overgrown boys!

And now back to Aussie prog ....

Actually, I have just noticed that respectable Aussie Prog Metal outfit 'Vanishing Point' haven't been mentioned in this thread, and aren't even in the Archives!

Their Discography is 'In Thought' (1997), 'Tangled In Dream' (2000) and their new release 'Embrace The Silence' is out on 16th July 2005... check 'em out!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Yeah i got this one, rocking flower power prog or something

Have other good ones aswell but this one's a personal aussie favourite of mine.

Fanny Adams was solid also, some heavy rocking, light psych with a very good band was highly ranked in the early 70's on top lists in the UK.

Have about 20 more or so but a real awsome progressive rock band is Bakery, this is a recommendation mates

Unfortunately AC/DC, Midnight Oil and INXS are the
best things to ever come out of the land down under.
But they definitely supplied sparks when they hit the
scene!

Sebatian Hardie is a little too Tier 2 for my
recommendaton as is Windchase. A little too english
derivative, symphonic and unoriginal.

The albums to listen to from the Outback are,IMO:
Sebatian Hardie - Four Moments
Windchase - Symphinity

If you like Camel's better stuff you will probably enjoy
these guys!

The Bee Gees (  English born they migrated when they were kids ) also started in Australia but needed a bigger scene.

How wonderful to be so profound

Hey Trotsky my Man Utd friend was at the game and admits it was a goal so we can rest in peace but sorry no Justice!

Sebastien Hardie live was very good especially in Sydney after the fans had heard about the trouble with Yes's management the night before in Melbourne. For those that don't know Sebastien Hardie were going overtime and steve Howes roadie came on and pulled the plug out which caused an uproar with the Seb H crew. Consequently there was great emotion for SebH from the audience. However after hearing SebH and being delighted I could not believe how awesome Yes were when Siberian Khatru opened. What a difference it was an 'eleven' moment.

I would completely agree there.

There HAVE been some lesser known prog bands to check out if you want to look into Aussie prog. Take a look into these. None of these are superstars but they aren't all horrible either:

  • Rainbow Theater
  • Dead Can Dance
  • Mackenzie Theory
  • Aleph
  • Mario Millo
  • Chris Neal
  • Chetarca
  • Cybotron
  • Master's Apprentices
  • Pirana
  • Quasar
  • Tamam Shud
  • Madden & Harris
  • Bakery
  • Greg Sneddon
  • Madderlake

Best of 2006 that I've heard:
PFM-Stati Di Immaginazione
Zenit-Surrender (Best "unknown" album)
Oaksenham - Conquest of Pacific
2007:
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
La Torre Del Alchimista - Neo

Nice list, good to those who wanna try out good aussie stuff.

I don't have them all but they're good.

Cybotron = Edgar Froese on Acid    This band is Australias own Tangerine Dream, if you like TD you gotta give them a try and you won't regret it!

Rainbow Theatre & Bakery is some of my favourites from aussie-land, Bakery is on my top 50 albums of all time... try it
