A quick review on the front page gave me that feeling too. Honestly if you're a Big Big Train fan, then i would work your way backward from The Difference Machine. That and Gathering Speed are both real quality stuff.

Underfall Yard is a masterpiece not to overlook so maybe that should be first. I'd be surprised if you dislike that.

Tangerine Dream's "Rubycon" and Far East Family Band's "Parallel World" are great albums to help you transcend.

Mellow mannn, you want melllooww?
I'd say you look in the Post Rock direction of things. Ambient as well. You're not gonig to find two many really chill albums in Prog Rock, at least from my experience. I could give you tons of rec from other genres that'd be more appropriate - ala Electronic, Freak Folk, Jazz. Here's a couple (prog related): Valtari - Sigur Ros Within And Without - Washed Out (Chillwave. I think it's progressive, at least it's appeal to a fan of experimental music) Pause - Four Tet (IDM, Post Rock) An Awesome Wave - Alt J (Indie/ Art Rock with a lot of diverse influences) Laughing Stock - Talk Talk Mark Hollis solo 13.0000 - This Town Needs Guns American Football Pygmalion - Slowdive Riceboy Sleeps - Jonsi And Alex The Campfire Headphase - Boards Of Canada Neu! '75 - Neu! Mala - Devendra Banhart (Freak Folk/Indie. The guy's soo chill, ya got to listen to it regardless) |

I think ANATHEMA's WEATHER SYSTEMS is quite mellow with in the symphonic prog/rock genre. Very easy going and full of emotion as well. :)

Franco Falsini's soundtrack for the movie Nasso Freddo (Cold Nose) is very mellow and dreamy/the film didn't happen though as far as I can remember). It's largely an electronic release, but there's a lot of beautiful guitar trickery in there as well. Great chill out album:

BELIEVE--Yesterday is a friend.
Extremly mellow prog album that features a lot of acoustic guitar and the violin. Soft, easy listening. Very melodic. Highly recommend this one. :) |

I just read this thread a little bit rushed, so I might have gone through some things unnoticed. From what I read, I agree with Anthony Phillips "The Geese and the Ghost", and Opeth's "Damnation". Still, I don't recall seeing the "Storm Corrosion" album listed here, and I guess you could hardly go more mellow than that... though in an obscure kind of way. And perhaps even Alcest's "Ecailles de Lune" wold do... perhaps the only metal album (and with some sort of grunting at that) I know which could be called mellow and relaxing... but this one is both things (metal and mellow) at the same time, which would seem to be to mutually excluding qualities in music (and it's not like Damnation, which is a mellow album with no metal from a metal band, nor like other bands that have metal elements and mellow elements in different parts of their songs/albums).
Some Rick Wakeman albums should do well too, like perhaps "The 7 Wonders of the World" (or the "Middle Earth" one, which is just about the same album), or "Stella Bianca a la corte di re Ferdinand", or several of his New Age or Piano albums (most of which I don't know). Or the John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess album. |
