Thanks Scott, huge fan here. I saw them recently here in Florida, so my state isn't eligible. So i signed up for the alternative contest where i can win a flight, hotel and two tickets to a concert of theirs. Thanks.

I have their entire discography but for whatever reason I have never seen them live.  Not really sure why that is the case.

I've never heard DMB. Is there an album I should listen to?

100% better live. Most of the listening i do is from live albums. Though i do have many of their studio LPs of course.

I saw the Dave Matthews Band back around 1994 I think, opening for Phish.  They were super tight.

I would recommend a live album, they sound better live :-)

Personally, my favorite album of theirs is the Central Park Concert.

I'd check that out. YouTube or purchasing it wherever.

Studio I would probably suggest "Under The Table and Dreaming" or "Crash".  Otherwise, you should probably check out one of their many live releases.

If you're up for 5 hours of live performance then 2006-07-07: DMB Live Trax, Volume 6: Fenway Park, Boston, MA, USA is a good one to check out.

DMB is one band that i can't put a genre label on - a "jam" band isn't enough LOL

They're like an indie new orleans'y sounding band. Very unique sound.

Kind of a more rhythmically-oriented Van Morrison.

I think of DMB as more of a hornier Phish.

Guy bowls a 297 and is screwed out of a 300 because of a nasty rack.   http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/the-turnstile/tragedy-heartbreak-bowler-denied-chance-perfect-300-game-123731498.html

Really, calling a band a "jam band" is almost an insult nowadays. It never seems to do the band justice.  I don't like people using the term to describe Phish (my "jam band" of choice), as it implies a lack of care about structure on the band's part.  In fact, these bands do care a lot about structure, they just like to invent the structure on the spot.  But they're always thinking about the whole, even as they're veering in what appear to be random directions.

Exactly.

When i saw DMB they made Jimi Thing a 25-minute epic with about 16 solos (4 each for trumpet, sax, guitar, and flute)
then ending with some repeated choruses to Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth. It was brilliant and had the crowd cheering like no other.

A nasty rack sounds like something I wouldn't want to see.
