'80s German Pop Hits

The 1980s seemed to be the only decade in which German-speaking artists could have international hits in their own language. The only time that came close was when Rammstein were at the height of their popularity in the late 1990s. Even in the '70s most German rockers sang in English while instrumental groups like Tangerine Dream had English song titles.

Nena is really great, and I love that song. Rock Me Amadeus is hilarious, but just not in the same league, and anyway, Falco was Austrian.

Interesting sidebar, when I was in Vienna for New Year's they were playing Nena songs (not just the hit) and everybody knew all the words, which I found awesome. I guess she is bigger over there than she was here.

I don't think that I have heard Da Da Da before, but I think that the chorus was used in a commercial here or there. 

I have a copy of Nena's song which is done in English called 99 Red Balloons.  It is on a cheap compilation.  I just listened to it now, but definitely remember it more for the German version that you have linked.

I remember Rock Me Amadeus from back in the day, but honestly only remember the chorus. Not sure if it was an English version or German version that was a hit here.

The song was used in a popular commercial in the '90s...can't remember for what though.

I think you can only fully appreciate Trio if you understand the german language and the german culture. The art of Trio is, what they sing (the lyrics), how they sing it, how they perform it (how they look like, when they play it), how they breach conventions, and that they play it with very few or simple instruments. They were really hilarious, especially live.
