Imagine looking at Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon cover. Now imagine it is a 3-D entity. Now give the whole thing a 90 degree turn. That's what the new Dream Theater album cover reminds me of.

Oh, if you're liking them, then you're up to a ride. Good luck discovering them. If you want any help about where to go next, just ask, some of us would be happy to give you our opinions.

From a marketing perspective both are logos....The bottom one is a symbol, the top one is a title mark, word mark or word graphic...for example:
NIKE is the company name and a wordmark graphic. The "swoosh" is the company logo, usually both used together.

With regard to Dream Theater, the symbol is related to the "company" Dream Theater....both refer to the same thing, from a marketing perspective, I am sure its what they prefer.

Dream Theater is getting far too heavy for my tastes recently and ever since Systematic Chaos, the albums have have had really fantastic material and really boring material. They've been embraced by the metal community and I feel like they've been catering more towards them recently instead of their prog fans. They're leaning more toward the technical side of things than the actual musical lately. Hell, I'd go as far as just calling them technical rock/metal now instead of progressive.

The above statement in no way means I'm not super excited for the new album release. On the contrary, I'm anxious to hear what it's going to be like with Mangini as a full fledged member.

The funniest part is that Hugh Syme has done all of their art since Octavarium. I love Hugh Syme, but apart from Octavarium, the other covers have been a little... not so good haha

^Yeah, his DT covers have been quite a letdown, especially considering the good work he's done with Rush over the years.  Though I'm not too crazy about the CA cover.

I love the Moving Pictures cover, especially the back.  Nothing says "Prog" like a triple entendre picture LOL

Most of the art in CA is pretty "eh" as well. I wonder what his deal is! It's kind of like since he's become purely Photoshop based his quality has steadily declined.

Yes, that one was brilliant; I personally think that the abstract bleakness of Grace Under Pressure was his high point in Rush's discography; Counterparts, A Farewell to Kings, Roll the Bones, and Vapor Trails were also excellent.

I disagree a lot with these statements. Octavarium was quite cool, but I think that SC was great, I think the art was way better than the music. I mean, the whole concept of the ants was kind of cool. And the most recent work in ADToE has really cool stuff, like the old warrior in the desert and the cycleboy in the cliff and in the dock.

Maybe it's not quite for "proggies", but the art itself added something to the concept.

But of coruse, every inch of their work is quite analyzed but that's the essence of DT fans / haters.
Change the program inside... Stay in silence is a crime.

Yeah, I would agree, I like the SC cover actually.  But ADTOE had a very lame design in my opinion, with the overly bright cover and the clip art unicyclist...bleh.  Not a bad idea really, but was executed poorly.

But BC&SL... That looks like a digital design student's final project, not the work of an established graphic artist

I'd argue bad idea and poorly executed Smile

I do like the Octavarium cover, but I think the rest from the 2000's range from decent to bad.

The Octavarium cover is just cool because it has a Newton's Cradle on it.  A Newton's Cradle can turn the most lame and pedestrian album cover (...or desk...or science class) into a wondrous and majestic extravaganza of nifty physics.
