I'm not sure it's that good of a thing... I'd rather talk of depenelasiation of some drugs in some cases (small quantities)

I do live in the Netherlands during the week, and coffee shops are legal, The actual distribution of these CS is handled legally by the Hell's Angels (it's a way to include them in society).
But as you can probably guess, the fifth thing they did was to distribute start illegal/hard drugs under vthe cover of that legal distribution...

And to be honest, if it's nice to have CS dealind with marijuana (and "magic mushrooms" shops are also legal), and the coolest thing to do is sit on an Amsterdam terrace rolling a doobie and sparking it up, while sipping on a Belgian Trappist brew, while chewing the fat with the police agents (OK, they won't sit down at your table, they're on duty), I don't think most other country's population is ready to handle such freedom (and that includes Belgium, US, UK or Canada), because there isn't that rational and civilian responsability that the Dutch have...

It's little wonder that border towns to Belgium and Germany have severely closed or restricted the coffee-shops in their territories, because the foreigners simply don't act cool enough... they just can't handle this freedom kindly offered by the Dutch society.

If you think smoking crack is a suitable discussion topic then perhaps you should think a little harder before posting anything related to drugs. (And since you saw nothing wrong is suggesting sleeping pills to a teenager then perhaps you should avoid posting anything concerning drugs all together, even antacid tablets), and you can consider that to be your warning as outlined in the Site Rules and Guidelines. And you can cut-out the "whatever" flippancy.

Because people keep starting drug-related threads and it is a legitimate topic for discussion. However, they always (and I mean always) breach the guidelines eventually because some people struggle to tell the difference between discussion and promotion, and if you are in any doubt, any question that runs along the lines of "who would you <<commit_an_illegal_activity>> with?" will be seen as breaking the rules here.

Cooee!!! this forum is not about crack, it's about weed, interesting too and most prog. Besides the proven health benefits it should be legal. I lived in Holland for 8 years, do not smoke pot because it has the adverse effect on me compared to others, however I think it's less harmless compared to even alcohol, plus people do not get in touch with crack dealers if they can obtain skunk legally, thus less temptation = crime.

Didn't the Dutch law change a couple of years ago so that coffee shops now can not sell weed to not-Dutch customers? (although I heard that they rarely respect that law). It's a couple of years that I have not been to Holland, even with it being so close to my place. I've been there many times during my life though and I regularly work close with Dutch people, and never had any perception that the Dutch society is any worse than most other European ones or that they are any more prone to consuming drugs, in my book Holland is a clean proof that with the correct education and mentality there is no big risk that by legalising weed the society will fall prey to drugs abuse.

The experimental community of Christiania in Copenhagen is also an interesting study case, although when I was there (around 2001) the feeling I got was not that good, it was very peaceful and everybody was very kind but it felt a bit decadent, like it has become just another business (a tourist attraction) and drifted away from its original ideals.

Finally in agreement with Kati, I believe that alcohol is the most dangerous of the soft drugs, most people can handle it with the required moderation but for those who fall a bit too deep, it can be really nasty. Next are normal cigarettes, the amazing power of tobacco being that it's extremely addictive without actually providing any 'drug-like effect', you don't feel high, you don't feel better, yu don't feel happier... yes it can feel 'pleasant' but for the most part it's just addiction for the sake of it (and I'm one of its prey Ermm).
