^^^^The songs with Phil Lynott's vocals aren't bad!

No, thanks!  Do you have any more information on it?

Justin Hayward sings Forever Autumn and the rest is crapTongue

ok I know some like it but for me a 'cast' that includes David Essex and some girl who was in a TV show called 'Rock Follies' does not a great album make imo

lots of people here like it.  I think it's pretty accomplished, if a bit repetitive in parts, and part 4 is weak (the one with David Essex  Tongue), but Richard Burton's narration and excellent vocal performances by Justin Hayward, Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann), Julie Covington (maybe she is the follies girl?) and Phil Lynott

I like Chris Thompson , forgot he played on it. Julie Covington was is Rock Follies and did a version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina if I recall correctly. Not a fan of the album obviously although I think it works better as a peice of live theatre. Still sells out like nothing else in the UK.

It's not David Essex's fault, the Artilleryman section plods regardless of who sings it.

I like War Of The Worlds although conversley to Richard I find Forever Autumn a little dull. I also like the David Essex bit. And David did have at least one brilliant single with "Rock On". He was also great in That'll Be tha Day and Stardust and The River. Was he in Eastenders too? Yeah he was.

And it doesn't matter if Julie Covington was in Rock Follies her voice is beautiful and she is great on WOTW. Phil Lynott hams it up a bit too much though.

Richard Barbieri's wife Suzanne did a half-decent cover of Rock On.

And Def Leppard did a rather cool one too.

Although War Of The Worlds isn't Prog anyway...is it?

Not at all (it Wayne was already in Xover when I joined, I would have put it in PR myself)

it's really a rock opera, that being especially clear on the "Spirit of Man" part.  I can't be objective about it.  It sounds prog enough to these ears, but I wouldn't scoff at prog related.

I have no problem with it being regarded as 'prog' , it's that I don't particularly like it much.

Sci Fi for me was always Hawkwind - Silver Machine blew me away for its sheer atmospheric spaciness. When I heard Space Ritual album life was never the same - it absolutely mesmirised me. I love that spacey sound. Since then I have heard every studio Hawkwind album.... I cant say the same for the live stuff as theres such a heck of a lot if it!

Uh...although I didn't look at all 11 pages of this thread, I'm guessing that at least one sci-fi prog band is missing.  My avatar is probably the only truly sci-fi concept album in prog.  (Though some of Parsons' stuff comes close.)

Not sure how many of these were mentioned, but I would also add EJ's "Rocket Man" and "I've Seen the Saucers"; The Reggie Knighton Band's "Rock and Roll Alien" and "UFO"; Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein"; and Styx's "Mr. Roboto."

Peace.

I wanna add Jefferson Airplane's ... "Have You Seen the Saucers" ... massive space rock piece and blow out! But then, Paul Kantner's "Have You Seen The Stars Tonite?" is even better! (that whole album of Paul's is magnificent!)

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^Thanks, Moshkito, another fine suggestion!   Perhaps we haven't been thinking hard enough on this thread?   I know we are missing several landmark works....

I wouldn't dare undermine you passion for a band I heartily loathe but c'mon, Silver Machine is Status Quo after their drinks were spiked
