I didn't have an internet connection yet, but I had a friend who used to go there and tell me about it.  That's where he learned that there were prog scenes in countries other than US, England, and Germany! Then companies like Wayside and Syn-Phonic started sprouting up and suddenly all these unheard CDs were available.  Exciting times.

I used to frequent alt.music.yes in the mid 90s, but I don't think I posted very much.

Good times!

On the internet, no one knows you're an old dog.

rec.music.progressive and alt.music.jethro-tull.

The only names I remember are Biffy The Elephant Shrew (aka biffyshrew) and Anil Prassad, both very congenial and knowledge-filled folks. Quite a few trolls and annoying know-it-alls.

I don't remember anyone named Knobby though.

Didn't Anil do a series of interviews with Fripp or Belew?

dejanews used to have good archvies before they were taken over by google groups.  I just took a short look and there is still a rec.music.progressive there, but I can't locate any particularly old messages there.  Granted I did not try very hard.

I just  went to current rec.prog.

You cant access any of the old stuff.

....
Back in those initial days -  '94/'95? -  often heavy-hitters were posting.  Moroni used to post at rec.prog.

The heaviest hitter I remember posting from those days was in Toby Howard's "Elephant Talk" Crimso email digest.  For a few weeks people had been ripping on Belew as being a bad fit for the band; they didn't like his vocals, lyrics, guitar playing etc...  One day readers were treated to a long and scathing response from AB himself.  I don't recall all his words but it was along the lines of, "If you can play guitar in 25/4 while singing band approved words you've written in 7/8 in front of 10,000+ screaming fans the last 25 out of 30 days while getting along with RF and BB 24/7, then you can have my job!"

What was even better was when the next Crimso album opened with "ProzaKc Blues" and AB sang:

"Well I woke up this morning in a cloud of despair.
I ran my hand across my head pulled out a pile of worried hair.
I went to my physician who was buried in his thoughts,
he said, "Son, you been reading too much Elephant Talk!"

LOL Bowdown Clap
